The Maine Buddhist Gathering together with the Dawn Redwood Zen Group is hosting a talk by Dana Sawyer, Professor of Philosophy at the Maine College of Art. Dana will speak on The History and Development of Buddhism. This informal lecture will be an accessible and informative overview of the history of Buddhism with an eye to explaining the development of the three major traditions: Theravadan, Mahayana and Tantrayana. The lecture will touch on what occurred as Buddhism was introduced to cultures outside of India, and will include some discussion of Buddhism in America today. Dana will deliver a non-evaluative description of these three major traditions, without attempting to judge which tradition is, for example, 'most true.' This talk will offer a wonderful opportunity to learn about the cultural context of different styles of practice, and to to gain an appreciation for the "flavors and colors" of different Buddhist traditions. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. The talk will be held at the Allen Avenue Unitarian Church in North Deering. Tea and snacks will be served.
