Here are a few of the programs we offer for people to come and learn at the Library, meet other community members, and discuss various topics.
Included in this calendar is our An Edible Discussion monthly "book group for foodies," our Community Matters events, and our Silent Book Group. See our full calendar of events here (https://www.jocolibrary.org/events).
Aisha Sharif will read from her book, To Keep From Undressing. This is a sensitive poetry collection about her experiences as an African-American Muslim woman. Time for discussion will address her writing process, and she welcomes discussion about cultural identity.
Writers, unite. You might be seeking critique, a great prompt or just shared space to focus on your work-in-progress. Find inspiration and other local writers here at the Library. Connect with the Johnson County writing community and hone your craft. Light refreshments will be served.
This popular meet-up includes a potluck sampling of foods based on each month's theme, and group discussion about cookbooks, cooking and of course, food.
Each month features a specific nationality or type of cuisine, with discussion led by special guest speakers who are food professionals. You can share new or favorite dishes, test others' creations, learn about new expert techniques and discuss food with other foodies. We usually have about 25-35 attendees so plan your dish to share accordingly.
This month's topic is protein! Protein is one of the three cornerstones on which all food is based. Ever since the Atkins Diet exploded in popularity over a decade ago, high protein diets have been a hot topic of discussion. Come learn about protein from the experts at Protein House while delighting in a protein packed community potluck meal. Don't forget that protein can mean more than just meat, so feel free to use this event as a chance to test out a vegetarian and vegan recipe!
Join us for our afternoon Monticello Book Group. The only thing as enjoyable as a book is talking about it!
May: Educated by Tara Westover
