Anthony Chabot Nike Classroom Staging Area - 6 to 7 miles - Dogs Off-leash
This hike will start in Castro Valley at the Nike Classroom parking lot across from EB Park Police Headquarters. This is a repeating Monday hike, so the route will vary. The distance is typically between 6 and 7 miles. I'll vary the exact route from week-to-week. If your dog is at all interested in swimming, you may need to leash up along a few trails since Lake Chabot is prone to toxic algae. This hike will leave PROMPTLY at the start time and we will always be done no later than 11:45 am. This hike will leave promptly at the start time. If you run into trouble the morning of the hike you can try to reach me at[masked], but most parks have poor cell service. HIKE RATING: Moderate HIKING PACE: 2.5 - 3 mph. We will wait at Trail junctions to keep the hike together. It is recommended that you obtain a map at the beginning of the hike in case the group is separated. DOGS ALLOWED? YES! Off-leash DRIVING DIRECTIONS: This is a great staging area, but a little tricky to find. If you're coming from the San Leandro side of Lake Chabot Road, this road is just 50 feet past the main entrance to the Lake Chabot Marina on your left. From Castro Valley, it's just 50 feet before the Marina entrance on your right. You'll see a sign "East Bay Regional Park District, Public Safety Headquarters." Turn onto this road and drive up the winding road to the top of the hill. The parking lot will be on your left. Note: THIS IS NOT the entrance to the marina where you must pay a dog fee. If you end up there by mistake, ask for directions to the Nike Classroom. Please use the Google Maps link above to familiarize yourself with the trip and explore various route options from your home. It is good practice to confirm the night before that any app you use takes you to where you expect by comparing the destination with what is posted above. Print out the driving directions. Many parks are in areas with poor cell service, so DO NOT rely completely on your smartphone's GPS. BATHROOMS: At the staging area and at least one other along the route. GRAZING ANIMALS: None likely PLEASE READ THE EVENT DESCRIPTION ABOVE BEFORE POSTING A MESSAGE.

What we're about

Welcome to East Bay Hiking Meetup! This group is all about hiking for fun and fitness. We hike on weekday mornings...and also on weekends. If you love to hike, this is the group for you!

Some things you should know about the group:

• Hikes will normally be in the 4 - 10 mile range.

• We average a speed of 2.5 - 3.0 mph.

• Each hike posted will indicate the length and difficulty you can expect. Please be considerate of other’s time and only sign up for hikes within your physical ability that you can complete within the time allotted.

• We wait at trail junctions to keep the group together, but as soon as stragglers are within sight the group will start off.

• There will be hills! You will need to be comfortable walking up and down steep hills.

• Most hikes are held in our beautiful East Bay Regional Parks with some excursions into State Parks and water district properties such as EBMUD and CCWD. We also occasionally organize urban hikes and trips to other regional park systems.

• Most hikes, but not all, will be DOG FRIENDLY and allow off-leash hiking. Some hikes will be on-leash and some will not allow dogs at all. Each hike will be clearly marked as either Dogs Off-leash, Dogs On-leash, or No Dogs.

• We are not professional hike leaders and don't have first-aid training. Participants must be responsible for their own safety and well-being.

This is a very social group. We like to talk, laugh, and enjoy ourselves while getting our exercise out on the trail. In the Bay Area we are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres of open space filled with hiking trails. Join us as we explore and meet new friends!
