There is a saying, “If you keep on doing what you always did, then you’ll keep on getting what you always got!”
Is it time to change YOUR life?
Our lives are a reflection of the people we are! If we want to change our lives, then it is best to invest the time to change OURSELVES – not our reflection! Then our exterior lives will rearrange themselves automatically, and accordingly.
If you are too shy, too angry, too sad, too much of a hoarder.. if you keep picking the wrong type of partner, keep getting into debt.. if in a thousand other ways you believe yourself too much of one thing, or not enough of another.. if you have tried your best, but still your LIFE doesn’t work the way you want it.. then it is time to look more deeply into who YOU are!
It’s very difficult - almost impossible - to do this alone. You need guidance, and you need a support group.
Self Discovery is the greatest adventure there is! It is totally about you. It explores how YOU can become more fulfilled. This is NOT one of the 'think positive - become rich and successful' type of corporate courses. It is about feeling fulfilled - whether you are rich and successful, or not! It explores anything, and everything within you, and in your life, that you feel is an issue for you. Bit-by-bit you will come to deeply understand what makes you tick – not just intellectually, but as a total experience.
Intellectual understanding does not necessarily change you. Nor does it necessarily change your life! If it did, then psychologists would be the most wholesome people in the world – and clearly that is not the case.
Experiential understanding is totally different. It works like this: By the time you understand something about yourself, you have already changed. In fact, it is the change within you that releases fresh understanding!
There is nothing more you need to *do*. Relevant changes in your life will automatically follow.
So, please don’t underestimate the importance of Self Discovery! For most of us it needs to be at the top of our priority list.
Is Self Discovery the same as self improvement? No. On the path to inner fulfilment I do not like the term ‘self improvement’, and do not use it. It is more appropriate to learning a skill. Otherwise I believe that it can be damaging! People have been trying to ‘improve’ us all of our lives! Are we improved yet?
Does a box of jigsaw pieces need improvement, or do we just have to discover how the already-perfect pieces fit together? When we discover how they fit, and rearrange the pieces accordingly, then we discover that there was ALWAYS a perfectly beautiful picture hiding within them! No improvement was needed.
Recently I started another Meetup group, Dance of Your Spirit. If you don't yet know about that group, perhaps you’d like to take a look.
These two groups overlap. So, why am I also starting this one? Although they are closely related, they are also different.
Self Discovery workshops will take place either fortnightly, or (most probably) every week. We shall meet one evening during the week, and this may effectively exclude people who don’t live in, or close to, Birmingham. Travelling here on a regular basis may be a problem for them. The regular commute MAY exclude them – not I.
People living elsewhere are still very welcome to become members of this family, and occasionally get a taste of what is happening. Who knows? Further workshops may spring up nearer to where you live in future! You could even become instrumental in helping me start it!
Another reason for people who live in other towns to stay on board is that sufficient interest will make it possible later to organise some workshops that last a day, or even the whole weekend, and a little later even workshop holidays! They can all be awesome!
You may have noticed that I am calling them not meetings, but ‘workshops’. Yes. There will be real exploration work going on! These ARE workshops! A hot-house where we can grow. A human laboratory.
Words are SO limiting! By trying to call these 'workshops' not 'meetings' (because those are often limited to talking and thinking - but not feeling), one falls into the other trap that the 'work' part of the name hides just how much fun we'll be having!
By contrast, Dance of Your Spirit events will take place on weekends. maybe every four weeks - or possibly every two weeks - depending on the requirements of the membership of THAT group.
Those gatherings also create a laboratory for inner exploration, and many activities of these Self Discovery workshops can also be found there. On balance, I would say that those will focus a bit more on spiritual exploration, including various meditations. The mood, the atmosphere, will be slightly different, and perhaps more suited to people who wish to explore the spiritual aspects of themselves.
Like I said, between the two types of workshops there is a generous overlap. It’s just a slightly different emphasis. You are welcome to get a taste of each group to see which suits you best.
In future, I can even foresee occasional events (certainly some fun picnics, parties, and even holidays!) where the membership of these two groups can meet, mingle, and get to know each other!
I have already found a nice space in which our Self Discovery group can meet. The room is not as large as I would like, but it has an atmosphere that I *do* like, and it's a start. It should be big enough for about 10-12 people. I am still putting out feelers to find larger rooms, if demand makes it necessary to host bigger workshops. ------------------------------------------------------ A BRIEF BIO ABOUT ME..
From as far back as the seventies I was either participating in self discovery workshops, or conducting them. Several years ago I stopped, in order to work more deeply on myself, alone.
During that seclusion my own ‘self discovery workshop’ continued. The only difference was, that then my actions were not being reflected in the reactions of other people, but by the mirror of silence. It is like throwing pebbles into a still pond: The kind of ripples we create can be seen by a meditative mind clearly. Growing through relationships, or growing through silence: These are the two paths, and when we add ‘conscious awareness’, they both work.
Recently, a fresh energy began to surge up in me to start helping people again. In my lifetime I have been immensely fortunate to have benefited from many good teachers, and from countless people who loved me and supported my journey. Now I am getting on in years, but there is still time.. Time to give something back!
If you like the sound of this group, please join us!
If you are also interested in hearing about events at the Dance of Your Spirit group, then please also become a member there - otherwise those notifications won't reach you.
In closing, if you live outside Birmingham, and *IF* regular commute to evening workshops is difficult for you - then please - still remain a member! Keep this membership alive, because we are only just becoming established, and there are other exciting events to look forward to. Those may be easier for you, and by keeping your membership open, you will be notified.
