What we're about

This is a group for anyone interested in hiking, backpacking, car/tent camping, road trips, kayak and canoe outings, fishing, biking, and adventure traveling both here and abroad. All skill levels are always welcome. Most of the outings are free unless a camping fee or permit has been prepaid or if there is a fee to enter a park. Outing participants must provide their own equipment such as a backpack, day pack, kayak, etc. and any other gear necessary for the outing.

All of the outing leaders are volunteers. If the outing is a strenuous or difficult one you may be asked about your hiking history and your abilities. This is not only to protect you but the other hikers on the outing. YOUR PARTICIPATION IN AN OUTING IS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE OUTING LEADER.

Meetup is not free. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated!

Participants should be in good physical condition to attend any outing. Folks with an underlying medical condition should avoid moderate and strenuous outings. Participants who RSVP yes also agree to the Release of Liability statement: https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-dWiUFgVP/about/

Rain Creek, Mogollon Mountains, Gila Wilderness, Beginner Winter Backpack

This is an easy backpack suitable for beginners or experienced backpackers looking for an easy outing. It does however take place during cold weather. We will enter the wilderness at the Rain Creek trailhead on the western side of the Mogollon Mountains and hike in 1.5 miles upstream to a camping site adjacent to the creek. Once our camp is established there should be plenty of time to day hike and explore the area or just relax in camp along the creek. On Sunday we return utilizing the same route to our cars for the drive home.

There is only one stream crossing along our route to reach the camping site. Depending on the stream level you may get your footwear wet. The camping area can adequately accommodate 10 tents. We will be able to have a campfire barring any fire restrictions. The Whitewater/Baldy fire of 2012 did not affect this area so it was left untouched and pristine.

In the 60's and 70's the Rain Creek Divide Trail continued up stream all the way to near Center Baldy. Because of constant flooding the trail was difficult to maintain and was removed as an official trail by the Forest Service.

Rating: Easy/Moderate
Length: 1.5 miles in and out along the same trail....3 miles total
Elevation Gain/Loss: 600 feet
Fees: None
No dogs on this outing

It is an approximate 180 mile, 3 hour drive to the trailhead from El Paso on I-10 and US 62/180.

I have a water filter we can share and I have other equipment I can loan out for the beginner. Temperatures may dip to the freezing level so warm clothing and a warm sleeping bag will be needed.
