What we're about

Common Grounds Meeting Hall is a community project of WKDW 97.5 FM and Community Broadband Radio Association, a non-profit (IRS 501(c)(3))community radio station in North Port. We are 100% volunteer run and all of our programming is created in and by our community. The hall grew out of an idea to create a facility where people could meet in a safe environment and to give a professional stage experience to local musicians. Any non-profit organization can use the hall for no fee and WKDW does public service announcements for any non profit also without fee. The hall is a professional quality sound stage and true listening room that gives amateur and local musicians the opportunity to experience something other than "the bar scene". Our mission is to build vibrant community and our mission statement is "Building Community Through Open Communication." We do this through giving our community a voice and a place that is safe, welcoming and non-commercial to exercise that voice.

The Hall hosts Open Mic on Wednesday nights at 7:30 and Writers On The Air every Monday at 7:30. Music performances are every Thursday through Saturday. Literacy Volunteers meet every Saturday morning at 11:00 AM and North Port AA meets every Monday at 6:30 PM. You can see the schedule of events and watch for educational classes, art exhibits, live music and other community functions at commongroundshall.com. If you would like to join our growing family of volunteers send an email to info@kdwradio.com or come visit us at the station.

The String Rays are a fun-loving acoustic band based in SW Florida that combines cello, mandolin, guitar, harmonica and rich vocal harmonies. Showcasing the talents of Brenna Larson, Jeff Cowherd, Rene Wold and Coleen Marren, the ensemble performs as a quartet or trio, with other options available. Their heartwarming mix of originals and classic folk-country, Americana, progressive bluegrass and blues favorites will have you laughing, crying, and tapping your toes.

BRENNA LARSON is a gifted vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist who combines warmth and wit to engage audiences in her personal journey as wife, mother, career woman, shop-a-holic, and folk diva. Brenna's album, LIKE FINE WINE, is a collection of her originals that includes poignant love stories, true confessions and anything else that tickles her funny bone. Tongue-in-cheek favorites include "Buy More Shoes," "Gray Hair Blues," and "He Loved Whiskey." For more about Brenna and her music, visit www.brennalarson.com.

JEFF COWHERD's kick-ass mandolin riffs and rich vocal leads and harmonies add a unique sound to The String Rays. Jeff hails from Kentucky where he made the switch from lead guitar rocker to Newgrass/blues infused mandolin picker 30+ years ago and never looked back. Along the way, he spun his love of mandolins into his own mandolin brand, "JBovier", now headquartered in Englewood, FL.

RENEÉ WOLD is an accomplished cellist who can play anything from classical to folk, while contributing tight backup harmonies to The Sting Rays. Originally from Fargo, ND, she studied piano, guitar and cello, later performing with community orchestras and eclectic ensembles in Northern Minnesota. A woman of multiple talents, she worked as a florist, sign language interpreter, and sign shop owner before retiring to Florida for sunshine and musical opportunities.

COLEEN MARREN rounds out the group with vibrant harmonica, guitar and rhythm backup while belting out the blues with her own unique, gutsy style. Originally from New England, she had a long, successful career as a television broadcast producer before retiring to pursue her passion for music.
