The ancient and ‘Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang’ has long been shrouded in mystery, protecting its authentic Tibetan culture from outside influences; Mustang remained closed for many years to foreigners until it finally opened its doors in 1992.
The remote region of Mustang is situated in the far north of Nepal, extending into the highlands of Tibet, which was a separate kingdom within the boundaries of Nepal, until 1950.
Trekking through the villages of Upper Mustang is as close as one can get to trekking through Tibet, culturally as well geographically as its nestled on Tibetan plateau, 50kms shy of the Tibetan border. You will experience Tibetan culture first hand; a way of life unscathed for hundreds of years, though not for long unfortunately as roads are currently being built through mustang.
The Upper Mustang region comes alive with enthusiasm during the Tiji festival, which takes place over three days in spring every year. The Tiji festival celebrates world peace by depicting the victory of good over evil through dance performances by the local monks.
The itinerary has been tailored to feature the best of the classical , western and eastern route of Upper Mustang leading to the 300 year old Tiji Festival.
This experience only be done in a group and requires a specific permit.
Upper Mustang and the TIJI festival can be experience exclusively by Jeep as well. Message if you’re interested in a jeep only experience.
