What we're about

Our members get together once a month at different venues around Calgary to listen to speakers discuss topics related to artificial intelligence. The content is typically varied, approachable, and valuable, no matter your level of expertise. 2019.04 CHATA.AI, Darktrace, and Stream Systems @ Bow Valley College

Bow Valley College, North Campus

Our April meetup will be held at Bow Valley College, which has some exciting new curriculum that a BVC representative will share with the group. First, we will hear about the latest cyber AI security systems from David Masson (https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-masson-446988116/). Darktrace's product continuously refine its defenses by learning ‘on the job’ to differentiate between normal and abnormal behaviour in an enterprise, enabling it to flag even subtly malicious activity. Traditional cyber security technologies are blind to unknown threats, but self-learning cyber AI systems detect such novel attacks by spontaneously drawing connections that human programmers can’t see. Next, Henning Vilijoen (https://www.linkedin.com/in/j-henning-viljoen-m-eng-mba-849b0521/) and Kelly Cherniwchan (https://www.linkedin.com/in/kelly-cherniwchan-2969426/) from CHATA.AI will share the biggest issue in AI today…..the Cold Start Problem. This is a massive barrier of entry for anyone trying to get in to the AI space. If you don’t have enough quality data, the only AI you will produce is something that will have little value. There are a number of ways around this issue, and Kelly will provide a few examples of techniques to mitigate it during his presentation. Finally, José Meléndez (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jose-melendez-89691555/) will talk us through the process that Stream Systems uses to take simulation/optimization models from Proof-of-Concept (POC) all the way to a commercial model on their cloud-based platform SimOpti. He'll walk us through different models Stream Systems has developed for multiple industries (Oil & Gas, Mining, Crew Management), and talk about the challenges they faced.
