Impromptu - Fool Mother Nature Star Party

We haven't been having much luck with our scheduled star parties, so I thought, since it's supposed to be clear tomorrow night, we'd try an end around Mother Nature and try and fool her. I realize I'm giving a very short window for RSVP's, but I still have to get the list to park management tomorrow morning, so if you'd like to go, just do the normal procedure and RSVP with your license plate number by 9:30 tonight.

Enjoy the night sky away from the bright lights of the towns and cities in our area! The night will be dark - perfect for star gazing. Bring your own telescopes and binoculars or use those provided by our members. Dress very warmly--estimate clothing for 20 degrees colder than the predicted temperature.

RSVP is required at least one day beforehand. As a reminder, when you RSVP that you are attending, you will be asked to provide your license plate number. We need this to provide (number only) to the Park management who will then provide it to the State Police and State Park Police. If you are not on the list, you are not supposed to be there as we are there after park hours. If you are there and not on the list and the Police show up, we are not sure what the consequences will be.

Please review our guide to star party etiquette if you have not been to one of our star parties before:

As usual, we will be in the West Beach parking lot at Lake Taghkanic.

    So, how did it go?

It went very well. The sky was nice and clear for the most part. A bit cloudy at the beginning right where Mars and Saturn were, but it cleared up pretty quickly once it got dark. A few clouds down on the southern horizon later, but not enough to obscure Sag. Got Saturn, Mars, Neptune, Andromeda and her neighbors, Albireo, the Ring, the Lagoon and the Trifid, etc. and so on. A pretty good night over all until the wind popped up and we left about 11:30ish.

Oops, almost forgot, met Dan Notaro and showed him around a bit to get him familiar with the star party. Had a good time. Welcome Dan.

I'm so sad I didn't see this in time! What a perfect weekend for it too! Hope you all have a good view!

For those that didn't see this in time, I am going to use the list from last Friday and just add to it. So, if you were RSVP'd from last Friday's star party, you are good to go for this one as well. Ken
