January Star Party - CANCELLED

Enjoy the night sky away from the bright lights of the towns and cities in our area! The night will be dark - perfect for star gazing. Bring your own telescopes and binoculars or use those provided by our members.

RSVP is required at least one day beforehand. As a reminder, when you RSVP that you are attending, you will be asked to provide your license plate number and your make and model car. We need this to provide to the Park management who will then provide it to the State Police and State Park Police. If you are not on the list, you are not supposed to be there as we are there after park hours. If you are there and not on the list and the Police show up, we are not sure what the consequences will be.

Please review our guide to star party etiquette if you have not been to one of our star parties before:http://files.meetup.com/2674222/MHAA%20Star%20Party%20Etiquette%20Guide.pdf

As usual, we will be in the West Beach parking lot at Lake Taghkanic.

    Hi all,

Sorry, but while the Clear Sky Clock still says clearning after about 7 PM, nothing else does. Everybody else is calling for cloudy for most of the night. Here in Fishkill, it's still low, dark clouds with a few flurries flying around. So, while I hate to do it, the star party is cancelled. Maybe next month.

Hi Ken and group! Total cloud covered Town of Poughkeepsie as well. Sorry the Star Party had to be cancelled. I couldn't have made it but wanted to just check in and see how the party and the group were doing. Best wishes to all for the new year! I hope to enjoy some more fun Star Parties with you throughout 2017!

Clear sky chart says clouds leave tomorrow at 2100, keeping my fingers crossed.

True, but Clear Sky said it was going to be clear tonight from 1900 til midnight too, so..........hoping, but looking at the rest of the forecasts, not expecting much. :(

I saw that, but the Doppler Radar shows clouds moving in. We may need to move to Phoenix, Arizona.

Thank you Ken. Hoping those clouds move on already

    Hi All,

As much as I hate to do this, I think I will postpone til tomorrow night. It looks like everyone is calling for more than 50% cloud cover at the park for the time we'll be there. We'll see what happens tomorrow night.

So, at this time, it appears that weather will spoil this one? weather.gov calls for mostly cloudy skies with even a 30% chance of snow showers!

I am still at work in Peekskill. If it looks up there like it does down here, then I'd have to say you are right. I'll make a definite call when I get home, about 4 PM. But, right now, it's not looking hopeful.

    Hi all,

I know it's the first star party of a new year, but as a reminder, you need to enter your license plate number AND the make and model of your vehicle. Both items need to be entered when you are asked the question when you RSVP. If you haven't entered all the info required, please go change your RSVP to enter it. Remember, this is required in order for us to keep our permit to use the park after hours.

    Thank you for your cooperation,
    Ken

Is it ok to show up late, say 8ish?

    January 25

    • Ken B.

      Hi Michelle,

It is, but only after you RSVP yes and remember to enter your vehicle make and model and license plate number. Just please remember, once you top the hill and can see the parking lot, dim your headlights. If you are not bringing a telescope, please park facing the road once you have entered the parking lot and close to road please. This limits how badly your headlights blind us when you come in.

Thank you for asking and for your consideration,
      Ken
