What we're about

If you are interested in learning everything about mindfulness and how to develop a solid meditation practice, then this is the right ( and the best ) group for you.

Mindfulness practices are an effective way to reduce stress and improve well-being. Mindfulness meditation has been widely used as an effective way of dealing with health issues such as high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, etc., as well as for military training, drug abuse treatment, and other interventions. Pretty much you name it, mindfulness helps with it. If that's not enough, a recent study showed that regular mindfulness practice actually alters the expression of genes involved in immune system functioning, aging, stress response, and many others. Quite compelling, isn't it?

With the current popularity of mindfulness it is important to know what mindfulness is and how is different from other types of meditations, the science behind mindfulness (including changes in the brain )and how is meditation beneficial to our health. It is also important to know how to develop and maintain a personal practice. Sitting together and sharing experiences is a great way to maintain a solid meditation practice.

My name is Juan Jose Reyes. As you may or may not know, I took over as organizer of this meetup group ( Downtown Miami Mindfulness) in July 2016 ( please see my profile for full bio). My intention is to organize group sittings, lectures, discussions , guest speakers and more. I appreciate you being a member of this group and look forward to sitting together

I started practicing meditation in 2006 after I took a ten day silent Vipassana retreat ( SN Goenka). I'm a board certified physician and a qualified teacher of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program ( MBSR )by the UCSD Mindfulness Professional Training Institute and also trained with the UMASS Center for Mindfulness. I teach mindfulness meditation classes and I'm currently pursuing a Masters in Integrative Medicine. I also founded Mindstay, a company delivering mindfulness programs to individuals and healthcare/wellness professionals.

Absolutely all levels are welcome!
