Paddle Biscayne Bay part 3: Black Point North

Wanted to do this leg before the skeeters get bad, since the kayak launch is in a mangrove tunnel. The plan is to launch from Black Point, paddle north about 4-5 miles, turn around and come back. There are a few creeks and inlets to explore. High tide will be about 10:30 AM. There is no rental concession. Water and bathroom are in the marina. If winds are brisk the trip will be shorter, if it looks to be really windy (15 mph or more) I'll cancel. Skill level 2 for distance- no currents and water will be 5 feet deep or less.

Bring PFD, whistle, hat, water, insect repellant, lunch or snack.

Directions: Take the turnpike south to exit 9. Turn right onto SW 112th Ave, then right at the first light (SW 248th St). You need to be on the north side of the canal that parallels 248th St. Go east until you get to the marina, at which point the road turns left. Keep going past the marina entrance to 87th Ave and turn right after you cross a canal (Black Creek). After driving about 1/2 mile there will be some parking spaces on the left with a wooden bridge next to the handicapped spots. Just past the bridge you will see square wooden posts sticking up. This is the unloading and launch area. There is a short mangrove tunnel before you reach the bay, so any fishing rods need to be stored flat. Do not follow your GPS or you will end up 1/2 mile away in the motorboat marina.

Despite a brisk breeze, it was a nice little paddle. We explored 2 nice creeks/coves to get out of the wind some.

Although it was a bit windy it was great on the water. Nice and cool and got a bit of a workout as well. Definately worth it.

Remember we switch to daylight savings time 2AM Sunday. If you don't set your clock ahead 1 hour you will arrive an hour late and we won't be there.
