visit indian key

Indian key is an historic park in the keys, only accesable by water.  At one time it was the government seat for dade county.  It was attacked and burned by indians.  There are remains of the settlement that you can see.  But the biggest draw is that the island is an old coral reef.  And there are often lots of sea life swimming around it.  For more advanced paddlers you can paddle out to alligator reef lighthouse.  The water is often very clear and in 20ft or so of water you can easily see the bottom.   We might have a small sailboat there if you want to learn to sail

Boat rental is $25 for a single or $35 for a tandem.  The paddle to indian key is suitable for beginners.  Alligator light is more challenging with deeper water, ocean waves and strong currents.

Bring food and drinks, and your mask and snorkel.

It was a nice day, a little overcast so not too hot, a little breeze but not too much. We had a family of newbies with us, which made for a rather interesting day! Thanks to Miles for his usual concern and kindness. Always a pleasure to paddle with the MKC.

Really pleasant and relaxing trip with a great group of paddlers. First time to Indian Key.
After seeing all the colorful fish while snorkeling around the island I'm hoping the next time we go we get to see the reef at the lighthouse. Thanks for the great time to Miles & Kathy for organizing this one.

It is after Mile Marker 80 on the left. After you pass through Islamorada, you will see Bud n' Mary's Marina on the left, then you will go over a short bridge, then you will see the entrance (a gate) to Tea Table Key, and the launch site is right after that. As you may know, the MM numbers get less when you're driving towards Key West, so this would be at about MM 79.5. If anyone is using a GPS, perhaps you could put in Bud n' Mary's Marina, 79851 Overseas Highway, Islamorada.

Same basic question as rick, i have a sit-in (dagger), and i have not really gotten into the ocean with it yet- would my kayak be suitable for this paddle? Definitely bringing mask & snorkel! sounds fun!
