Last year we had a mild morning on Anchor Beach. Let's see if we get lucky this year. I can guarantee one thing: the sun will rise at 6:24am. Come a few minutes early to set up your tripod and shot. Once the sun goes up hang around for some cool shutter dragged shots of the surf. I've posted a few tips below. Check out shots from last year's event in the meetup album archive under Winter Sunrise...
This meetup is free and will be held weather permitting. THIS EVENT IS WAITLISTED. PLEASE UN-RSVP IF YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS EVENT. Heavy overcast predictions or extreme cold may cause a rescheduling. Dress for the cold and bring a flashlight.
Tips for sunrise off Anchor Beach.
`give yourself time to set up: once the sun starts to rise it may quickly go out of "magic range" especially if the sky is clear. I'd say you want to pull into the parking lot (no sticker needed at this hour) no later than 6:20 to set up. There is parking there and if full street parking in the area.
`a tripod is helpful if only allowing you slower ISO settings. You may want to underexpose somewhat from your auto meter suggestion to emphasize the sunrise effect. Consider experimenting with your white balance setting it for sun or even incandescent- just to mix things up!
`there are a few trees and of course the flagpole to place in the foreground as silhouette items.
`once the sun is 20 minutes high consider switching to surf shots. Experiment with shutter priority and, with your tripod, set your speeds anywhere from a 30th down for effect. This image was done at around a 1.15th of a second.
