Question/problem with define brushes

I'm new to the group and an intermediate photoshop user. I'm having this problem i tried posting on photoshop-haven a week ago with no response. Deadline for my project is this week and it's holding me back. Here's the probem:
This is a hi-res .psd file of 29 layers of worn brushes I downloaded from I was instructed to make a brush
from each layer using edit>define brushes. I tried making sure my image size is 2400 square, dpi 300, white background, black or greyscale brush. I spent hours googling answers as why it's greyed out. (Pattern isn't). I used the magic wand, marquee, tried
adjusting black levels... It only wants to take a portion of the image about 988
pixels which is too small for what I need - I want to use the whole brush design on teh layer ntot part of it which it only allows me to do. How do I get around this?

Any other resources for hi-res PS6 worn brushes?
