How the World Really Works – Vaclav Smil: Time slot A

Details

Join us for a discussion of How the World Really Works by interdisciplinary scientist Vaclav Smil, in which he pulls back the curtain on the physical and economic systems that underpin our lives. From energy and food production to globalization and risk, Smil offers a data-driven, no-nonsense guide to the forces that shape our world—often in ways we rarely stop to consider.

This is the first time slot available for discussion of this book. The second will likely be Tuesday August 19th at 6:30pm. Please sign up for one or the other, and please update your RSVP in a timely manner if your plans change.

In this session, we’ll explore questions such as:

  • What fundamental materials and processes keep the modern world running?
  • How dependent are we on fossil fuels—and what would it truly take to decarbonize?
  • How has globalization made us more prosperous—and more vulnerable?
  • Why do we struggle to think clearly about risk, uncertainty, and long-term change?

Whether you’ve read the whole book or just want to explore some of its central ideas, you’re welcome to join!

If you need help accessing an ebook or audiobook version of the text, feel free to reach out to me directly.
