Name: Valley of Fire — Top of the World Arch

**Rating:** 5.5 miles total with 1300 feet of climbing. Easy to strenuous. Plenty of hard rock slopes, sand flats, occasional bushes, minor scrambling. Likely Bighorn sightings.

This hike is in conjunction with **[Red Rock Hiking](https://www.meetup.com/red-rock-hiking)**.

This is a superb hike on the western side of Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. The area consists entirely of wildly colored sandstone buttes that crop up out of the sand all over the landscape. Basically it's like being on another planet.

The Top Of The World Arch is carved from the side of a great white sandstone dome that rises above many other lesser domes and ridges all around. The view from there is pretty big.

This hike is doable by moderately skilled rock scramblers, but beginners could get outside their comfort zones on the steeper bits. Only those confident walking up and down "steepish" stone slabs for considerable distances should apply for this hike.

Be aware that two parts of the hike involve crossing sandstone that's tilted enough to be quite dangerous, but at least it is free of loose rocks and sand. If you have agility, stamina, grippy shoes, and don't mind looking at nearby dropoffs, you will do just fine.

Overall tho, the hike is fairly mellow most of the time, and the scenery is mind bogglingly beautiful.

**Prep:** The usual for the desert; stout boots, leather gloves, hat, plenty of water (2 bottles), some food, and a desire for rough but unbelievably colorful desert vistas.

**The Drive:** 1.8 hours one way on pavement, and a $10 entrance fee per car. Be sure to have a writing pen to fill out the self-pay envelope at the entrance to the park, along with $10 in cash.

Those in Mesquite can go to Lower Flat Top Exit on I-15, at the Flying J gas station, at about 7:30am Nevada time, and meet the rest of us there. Coming from Vegas you can go to VOF and stop at Lot 2 on White Domes Road in the middle of the main valley. Be there by 8:50am Nevada time.

**Meetup:**
We meet in the dirt lot diagonally across the intersection next to a Terrible's Chevron station. There's plenty of parking there, even for semi trucks.
