About the talk:
The golden rule of web performance states that for most web pages, less than 10–20% of the end-user response time is spent getting the HTML document from the web server to the browser, while 80-90% of the end-user response time is spent on the frontend.

When we talk about performance testing, the most common activity that we do is to load-test our backend servers. We have come to a realisation that once we have optimised our servers and databases, our application is now performant. However, this should not be the case. Many factors affect frontend performance as well, and it’s equally important to test to ensure our users have the best user experience.

In this talk, I want to introduce you to both frontend and backend performance testing and why a hybrid approach to performance testing is needed to ensure your website is performant. I’ll also give a quick walkthrough of how tools such as k6 can help run both protocol-level (how performance testing is normally run through concurrent interactions at the protocol layer) and browser-level tests (testing with real browsers to provide a more realistic performance test). Finally, I'll also give a quick introduction to what fault injection testing is and how you can benefit from combining fault injection tests with your browser or protocol performance tests.

Please arrive for 6:30pm so that we can get you signed in with our Security Front Desk, and then escorted to our new Auditorium, where you can grab a tea or coffee, get settled and chat with everyone arriving.

After the talk there is the opportunity for all attendees to take part in 99 Second Talks, where they can use the time to trial a presentation they plan to give, ask for help to the community, share something they are passionate about, virtually anything they can think of.

Finally, there will be complimentary food/drinks (provided by our fabulous sponsor Xpertise Recruitment) and networking until roughly 21:00 (but you don't have to stay that late if you don't want to).
