Hallowe'en 2025 AMITYVILLE HORROR / BURNT OFFERINGS '70s Haunted Houses!
Details
Hallowe'en is back! This year, iconic haunted house movies from the 1970s.
This meetup lands actually ON Hallowe'en! So maybe, if you want, we can go get in some trouble downtown after we talk about the movies.
We're going to compress Hallowe'en a little this year, and only take two weeks. But let's watch four movies anyway. So for this week, let's watch THE AMITYVILLE HORROR and BURNT OFFERINGS.
THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979) needs no introduction. This is the single all-time iconic haunted house movie. GET OUT! James Brolin at his hairiest, Margot Kidder at her huskiest, glowing eyes and all those flies. (Every era has a particular look for its B-List actresses, and in the '70s it was that Karen Carpenter look. Every one of these four movies has one: Margot Kidder, Barbara Hershey, Cristina Raines, Karen Black (Karen Black kind of stands out as an independent person). The others with the same look we won't see are like Jessica Harper, Brooke Adams, Karen Allen.
BURNT OFFERINGS (1976) might be the most obscure. It's directed by Dan Curtis (of Dark Shadows fame), his first feature film. Starring Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Bette Davis, it's another classic haunted house movie, and it's good, but not as iconic as Amityville Horror.
Oh one more amazing thing. The Burnt Offerings house is the same one as the mortuary in Phantasm!
As always, a free link to the movie is available on the website, https://gregoryberry.net/halloween2025 (still down!)
We will meet on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 8PM, at LEANING TOWER PIZZA at 24th Street and Lyndale, same as always. See you there!
