MNFuturists Presentation/Discussion Drug Frontiers - Pointers to the Future
Overview
Join a curious, open-minded crowd for future-focused talks and lively discussion; share useful insights, hear fresh perspectives, and grow your thinking online
Details
From 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM we discuss RANDOM BITS where anybody can bring information to the group that might be useful or important when considering the future. Then the presentation starts at 10 AM and lasts until noon. There is usually some time for discussion.
The frontiers of drug use and drug research today are in the type of
drugs called biologics.
Biologics are a class of medical therapeutics made with living
organisms. They are more complex than pharmaceutical drugs and cannot be manufactured as easily. Biologics are delicate and require careful storage, and they usually cannot be taken orally. They are usually
expensive but may be more effective than older disease treatments.
Biologics treat diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and diabetes
by targeting specific proteins or cells. Biologics are drugs made from
complex molecules manufactured using living microorganisms, plant, or
animal cells. Many are produced using advanced biotechnology techniques.
And the new cures and potential treatments using gene editing techniques also employ biologics, even though their fanciful descriptions seem to suggest infusions of teeny tiny micro or nano scale scissors or stiches.
