Oregon Board Classifies Marijuana as Schedule II Drug in Accordance with OR Law

* Posted: July 01, 2010 02:34 PM
* Topics: Controlled Substances

On June 16, 2010 the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy acted to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule II controlled substance in accordance with an Oregon law that passed last year. The new law requires that marijuana be removed from a list of controlled substances that have a “high abuse potential and no acceptable medical use in the United States.” After reviewing scientific and medical literature and hearing testimony from experts and members of the public, the Board voted to move marijuana into Schedule II. The Oregon Medical Marijuana Act was approved by Oregon voters in November 1998 and allows patients with a qualifying debilitating medical condition and a written recommendation from a physician to grow, or obtain from a designated caregiver, medical marijuana. Patients are also required to register with the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program.
