Go in Central Park

Since the meetup last year in Central Park was so much fun, I've wanted to do this for a while.

Come enjoy playing Go under the shade of the central park trees. Both long-time players and those just curious about learning the game are welcome to come. Go outdoors is always fun and last year we got over 20 people rsvp'ing. Let's try to make this year even bigger!

Central Park map to the (approximate) location: link.

Following what we did last year, we'll meet up around 1:00pm at the corner of 5th Avenue and 59th Street, near the statue (see it on google maps: statue image). We'll wait 10-15 minutes for people to show up, then head for Sheep Meadow and set camp under the trees somewhere. People aren't obligated to come at exactly 1:00pm, but if you're not familiar with Central Park, it might be easier to head for the Meadow with a group.

If you are coming late or can't find the meeting location at 1pm, you can also call my cellphone at[masked]-8229.

The event will be delayed in case of inclement weather (rain).

Just as last year, we need volunteers to make this event even more fun! If you are able to bring a board (which which are desperately needed for an event this size...), snacks, drinks or other games, please leave a comment listing what all you'll be bringing. All snacks and drinks will be reimbursed.

There will be a $5 fee for the event, which will be spent on reimbursements on food, drinks and the tarps. Leftover money goes to the Mostly Go Clubs fund.

The the meetup was great overall. The per meeting fees are a bit too steep for me to attend regularly though.

  • Alex

Hey guys, I'm sorry, but I don't think I can show up after all. Some important things came up out of the blue.

    August 3, 2012

  • Jori H.

Thanks guy! that already takes us to 9 boards, which is enough for 18 people to play at the same time!

    August 3, 2012

  • Norman P.

    I'll be bringing a board.

    August 3, 2012

  • Justin Y.

Also I'll be bringing a board as well.

    August 3, 2012

  • Justin Y.

Here's suggestion: if it rains we could just head on over to fatcat's!

    August 3, 2012

  • Justin Y.

    i'll bring a 15inx15in magnetic set

    August 3, 2012

  • Michiaki Y.

I'll bring two, a proper set and a smaller magnetic one.

    August 3, 2012

  • Qian

ill bring my set. but only paper board.

  • Jori H.

Alright, it looks like tomorrow definitely won't rain during the day, so I'll be seeing all of you in the park tomorrow! If you come in late or just can't find the group, you can call me at[masked]-8229. Also, so far I only know of 5 go boards being brought for 27 people, so it looks like we'll be comically under-equipped. If you can bring a board or two, please drop a note!

Is there someone I can call to see if you guys are still at Sheep Meadow? I'm coming late -- around 2 p.m. or possibly later...

    July 29, 2012

  • David C.

What time is the meeting at Fat Cat tomorrow?

    July 29, 2012

  • Cyril L.

There are a lot of peole last two meetings at Fat Cat.But sometimes there are really so few.

    July 29, 2012

  • Cyril L.

Jori:could we meet up at Fat Cat tomorrow?

    July 29, 2012

  • Jori H.

Fat cat actually used to be a weekly event, but there were so few people going there on average (usually around 2-5 RSVP'ed), that we dropped it to a semi-weekly. Now it seems to gather 6-9 people every time it happens, so cutting it seems to have improved the attendance :)

    July 28, 2012

  • Funing W.

Why not make fat cat a routine event every week...

    July 28, 2012

  • Jori H.

Justin, you could set up an event for tomorrow at fat cat, and we could keep this event in store waiting for a weekend with clear weather. It sounds like there would be interest in fat cat tomorrow :)

    July 28, 2012

  • Justin Y.

could we meet up tomorrow at fat cat's or something ?

    July 28, 2012

  • Jori H.

Cyril: do you have a place in mind that we could use indoors?

    July 28, 2012

  • Cyril L.

If it is rainy tomorrow,we can change the place rather than the date. After all,we can play go in central park every week, but we could lose the chance to play Go tomorrow

I won't be make it, then, because I will be at the US Go Congress.

    July 28, 2012

  • Jori H.

Hi guys. I'm sorry to say it, but tomorrow's weather forecast is 40% chance of rain/thunder for pretty much the entire day, so I moved the event till next weekend :( let's hope 8/4 will give us a better weather for playing Go outdoors.

  • Jori H.

    Excellent :D thanks guys!

    July 24, 2012

  • Alex

I only have a crummy magnetic set, but I'll definitely stick it in my bag in case we come up short.

    July 24, 2012

  • Matthew H.

    I'll bring a board.

    July 24, 2012

  • Michiaki Y.

I'll definitely bring a board, but I could bring two if there's a dire shortage.

    July 24, 2012

  • Jori H.

I had to move the event on the Sunday (7/29), because the weather forecast still predicts rain and thunderstorms for Saturday. It might have to be moved till next week if the forecast turns out to predict rain for sunday too.

Also, so far I don't know if anybody else is bringing boards to the park. With 13 people and only two boards, we would be hilariously under-equipped. So if you can bring a board, please let me know.

  • Jori Happonen changed the date and time from Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 1:00 PM to Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 1:00 PM

    July 24, 2012

  • Jori H.

If the weather forecast stays the same, I'll have to move this till sunday. Right now it says 30% chance of thunder on saturday and 10% chance on sunday.
