Clouds Rest Summit Bivy

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Hike the singular Clouds Rest (9926') from Yosemite Valley in early winter conditions, and camp on its spectacular view-drenched summit. This will be a long route given the 10 miles and 6000' of elevation gain with a winter pack. Although the route is class 1 along a good trail the entire way, it has to potential to be quite challenging if there is fresh snow.

    Planned Itinerary:

Friday December 14: Carpool, carcamp at Upper Pines campground, which is available on a first-come, first served basis (largely empty at this time of year).

Saturday December 15: Early (6 am!) start from backpackers parking lot; 10 miles and 6000' gain with full pack and winter gear; make summit camp well before sunset around 4:30 pm; sunset photos

Sunday December 16: Break camp; hike back down; enjoy a nice lunch together; drive home

Certain experience and conditioning are required for this trip given the short amount of daylight, the length of this route, the early winter conditions, the possibility of temperatures into the low-teens, and the omnipresent potential for unruly winter weather. Please answer the RSVP questions to confirm that you have cold weather backpacking, snowcamping, or mountaineering experience and appropriate gear. (Ask me if you are not sure!)  In order to summit before sunset we will need to travel fairly lightly and quickly for this time of year. Ice axe, crampons, or snowshoes, may be required depending on the weather over the next month.

Hi Bill, I was there on Sat-Sun. Just FYI John Muir trail is closed due to falling rocks even though trailhead doesn't say that (both ends). We didn't see snow till shortly after Half Dome/Clouds rest junction. The little creek was flowing as much as last year when we went together. Any wet place on the rock was icy so it took caution every step even though it was very warm weekend.
    Good luck and enjoy!

Based on the last few weeks of weather and this week's forecast I am guessing there will be some amount of ice on certain rocky/shaded sections of the trail. While you don't normally think of needing crampons an a trail they may actually be required or at least extremely helpful. I was up in this area after some storms a couple years ago and some rocky sections of the trails would have been basically impassible without crampons...

Weather doesn't look too shabby long-range.

NOAA is reporting 30% chance of precip. We'll see how that works out as the week comes along.
