The Spielberg epic "LINCOLN"!

  • Feb 2, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

EPIC fans! Fans of Spielberg, of Daniel Day Lewis, and of historical dramas - have I got a great Act III (my 3rd event hosting for the group) for you!

Come on out on February 1st to the VUE in the Westfield Shopping Center in Stratford for a true dramatic actor's story - LINCOLN.

Come to see a true-to-life vision of a time in America which takes its place among the great historical turning points in world history. The still-young democratic republics' future hung in the balance, and the great Abraham Lincoln stepped to the fore to answer the call... truly a magnificent and inspirational leader. Arguably tops even George Washington as the greatest President in U.S. history.

Here is a link to a terrific page with historical facts and trivia about President Lincoln and the turbulent times he lived in, on the History Channel website: http://www.history.com/topics/abraham-lincoln

Here is a FANTASTIC (official) trailer on YouTube for what looks to be an incredible (and moving) movie experience: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiSAbAuLhqs

For the true movie fanatics among us, here is a link to the BoxOfficeMojo website on how the film is doing Stateside: http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=lincoln.htm

Finally, this fine film has been rewarded with an unequaled TWELVE Oscar Nominations! Check this out at the link for a Guardian article on the Oscars: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/jan/10/oscars-2013-baftas-2013

The web link for the restaurant (Italian - Rossopomodoro) so you can peruse the menu follows here: http://www.rossopomodoro.co.uk/index.php?s=res&p=noh

The Trip Advisor Reviews for Rossopomodoro are here at this link: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d1389757-Reviews-Rossopomodoro_Notting_Hill-London_England.html

Why bemoan the fact the Groundhog might see his shadow (hopefully not - I want Spring!) - come out and let's have a nice dinner, a pint or three, and watch a great movie together.

If you liked Skyfall... if you liked the Hobbit... Oregon Expat Productions (wink) brings you Act III - at the classic Electric Cinema in Notting Hill - LINCOLN. Hope to see you there.

UPDATE #4 (Thursday 17 January): It's OFFICIAL - it is the Electric Cinema for our film! Please book as soon as possible below (see the link after "Tickets") at the link provided, for the 1330 (130PM) showing. RESTAURANT - We will be dining at the fine Italian restaurant Rossopomodoro, just around the corner and behind the Electric (at 184a Kennsington Park Road) - what a way to top off a great movie, eh??

For those interested (me for sure!), here is an advert for a "behind-the-scenes" i-book on the making of the film Lincoln! Check this link out: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/lincoln-steven-spielberg-film/id577194510?mt=11

What: The historical drama LINCOLN!

Where: The Electric Cinema, 191 Portobello Road, Notting Hill W11 2ED (Notting Hill Gate Tube) / Restaurant - Rossopomodoro (Italian) at 184a Kennsington Park Road.

When: Our Meeting Up Time is 1300 (1PM) - but movie Showtime is 1330 (130PM). NOTE - As the movie running time is 2 1/2 hours (150 minutes), I anticipate our leaving the cinema to head to our restaurant to occur at approximately 1630/1645 (430/445PM) to sit down at 5 - for the short walk around the corner and behind the cinema to the fine Italian restaurant ROSSOPOMODORO (at 184a Kennsington Park Road). Note - for those coming only to the restauarant and not the film - as I don't know precisely when we will be leaving the cinema, I suggest you arrive for the official start time of the dinner at 5PM - that way you will not arrive before we do and wonder where we are.

Tickets: Book Online as soon as possible from this afternoon Thursday the 17th, at the following link to the Electric Cinema online: http://www.electriccinema.co.uk/filmdetails.php?film=1976

Note - Standard Ticket Prices are 18 Pounds. This is only 3 Pounds more than the VUE cinema in Leicester Square (our alternative cinema), which by comparison is crowded and much less well-appointed. I know this ia little more than we usually pay for one of our movies, but thought we could "splurge" slightly and view a film at one of the classic London movie houses.

Tube: Notting Hill Gate Tube (Central / Circle / District Lines) / Ladbroke Grove (Hammersmith & City Line)

Meeting Up: Meet inside the cinema after picking up your already purchased (previously online) ticket. The seats are allocated (assigned), so that is why we are meeing briefly beforehand to say hello, and then again to eat afterwards. As noted above, I will be sending out my mobile phone number to the RSVP list, along with details about where to find the group, the night before the event (in this case, will send that out Friday February 1st)

    Hi everyone,

I've just joined the group and wondering how you organise tickets booking/buying go together? Also how much does it usually cost - any special prices or regular ones?

And so, say if I RSVP to a movie how do I get a ticket for the movie?

    thanks.

Hiya Elena - welcome to the group! Normally we buy our tickets individually. In this case, via the web link for the Electric Cinema... alas (!), the tickets for Lincoln are sold out! I am sorry you won't be able to make my film, but you are more than welcome to come to our "Part 2" of the event, our dinner at Rossopomodoro's. Otherwise, Gerard is hosting a follow-up event on Wednesday for Lincoln (Orange) and you could see the film with a nice group of people there. Film tickets are normally between 12-18 Pounds, normally closer to 12, if an opening night / weekend for a big film... sometimes cheaper at smaller cinemas and films.

My favourite London cinema! It's always a great pleasure and a most enjoyable experience to watch a movie at The Electric! I have seen "Lincoln" already and anyway I gather that the seats are all sold out, but wishing you all a fun time on Saturday.

Hiya Laurent! The movie is 2 1/2 hours long, so with previews / trailers at the front, we should be meeting at the cinema entrance to go to the restaurant at approximately 430PM (we will meet at the restaurant beginning about 445PM). See you there...

I'm sorry to say but £18 (+ booking fee) is not something I'm into. Is there going to be another group outing at another time for people who can't make this one?

Hello, Jane! Sorry to hear you won't be joining us on the 2nd at the Electric... too bad, as you'd be surprised how plush and beautiful the cinema is, and happens to be located just around the corner from a nice Italian restaurant we will be eating at. Please remember though that the average ticket price for an opening-weekend movie like this will be around 15 Pounds (only 3 less than this one) and in lesser cinemas. West End for example will often run 20-30 Pounds... I posted it here as I had hosted a movie event here that was quite successful for another group (The Avengers) and as those people enjoyed it so much I thought our group would as well. It's a chance to "splurge" a little I guess - the cost of a beer difference. The booking fee, alas, is a burden we all share - but again that's on top of any ticket price. To answer your question though, I'd be happy to host another event for Lincoln in the future if there is enough demand for it.

Friday 11 January Update: Ticket sales have begun at VUE, however so far, only Leicester square is showing Lincoln showtimes. IF that holds permanent, then I am planning on moving the film to the VERY COOL (and newly refurbished in the classic style) Electric Cinema, on Portobello Road in Notting Hill. A really classic cinema I have hosted a movie at before, with great restaurants nearby. I will let you know asap if and when that that change were to become permanent. Have a great weekend!

CANNOT WAIT for this movie.. as much as I have waited on pins and needles for Skyfall and The Hobbit, this one really looks fantastic. I updated the event page with a link to a fascinating History Channel page on Lincoln the man, and also a link to a great YouTube trailer. Check it out...
