Dine @ Versailles Diner, Then Discuss Birds in Fantasy & SF

The May Dinner and Discussion will both be held at the Versailles Diner. Dinner is at 6:30 PM. The discussion is at 8:00 PM. You can make the discussion without having dinner, although if you attend the discussion, you should order something (coffee and dessert is fine) to help support the Versailles.

The evening's discussion will be for the birds. We'll talk about birds in works of fantasy, science fiction and horror. This includes mythological birds like the roc and the phoenix, and real birds like ravens, hawks and eagles which are important in works of these genres. The obvious starting point is Hitchcock's THE BIRDS, but don't forget smaller flicks like THE BEASTMASTER.

We'll be looking at works of cinema, literature, television and more. Dinner & Discussion is held on the third Tuesday of the month (except December). Here's a list of topics we've discussed in the past:

If you have an interest in science fiction / fantasy / horror, please contact me directly at SFABCPhilmu (at) to learn about lots of other north Jersey events.

My apologies to Ingrid and to Jim. This event had been scheduled earlier in the year and was snowed out. I did a cut-and-paste and didn't correct the changed venue. We did connect with Jim, but sorry, Ingrid.

As far as what actually happened. Five of us dined at Jose Tejas and were joined by two more at the Versailles.

We came up with quite a flock of feathered friends who had appeared in works of science fiction / fantasy / horror: chickens (CHICKEN RUN), crows (THE CROW), dodos (TV: PRIMEVAL). doves (MARS ATTACKS), falcons (Witch World books), hawks (Hawkman comic book), owls (HARRY POTTER), pigeons (story: Pigeons from Hell), penguins (comic book: Justice League of America's mutant killer penquins), ravens (THE RAVEN - Vincent Price), sparrows (Earthsea books) and swans (Jove & Leda from Greek myth. Plus Hitchock's THE BIRDS, mythological rocs & phoenix, plus alien avians and much more.
