Eat First, Then Discuss The Afterlife / Life After Death in SF/Fantasy

Part 1: Dinner

The January Dinner & Discussion will start with Dinner at Jose Tejas in Fairfield at 6:30 PM. Jose will not seat people until everyone is present, so anyone there by 6:30 will be at our table. Anyone arriving late is on their own. At dinner we talk about everything in the world except the evening's topic.

Part 2: Discussion

The Discussion will be held at 8:00 PM at The Fine Grind Coffee Bar in Little Falls. It's on Route 23 South (aka Newark Pompton Turnpike), in a strip mall a half mile or so to the south of the Willowbrook Mall.

You don't have to make the dinner to attend the discussion.

The evening's topic will be treatments of Life After Death / The Afterlife in fantasy, science fiction & horror cinema, literature and more. This is not a philosophical or religious discussion, but rather is focused on mass media. Cinematic depictions of the topic include blockbusters like WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, art films like DON'T TEMPT ME and genre films like HELLRAISER.

The discussion is not limited to films. Television series, books, comic books and other genres are all grist for the mill.

Here's a list of topics we've discussed in the past:

It was a learning experience. The Topic Discussion Group has met at a variety of locations outside Meetup for over a decade. This (21) was our largest turnout, more than doubling our norm. The Grind tried, but we had too many people for the space, and some of the group left early, unhappy with how things were set up. Having gone through it once, I can definitely see how we could do things better. Basically, we would break into two groups of 10, which is infinitely more manageable.

There was no way to have a coherent discussion given the situation, so I rattled off a number of examples of treatment of Life after Death, and invited each person to toss out one movie or story on the theme. Then I asked them to talk about it in smaller groups.

Things got better after some people left and we had room to breathe. We ultimately wound up in 3 conversation groups, though none were talking about the topic. Some people had fun and some had none.
