Gloria, A Rare 99% on RT!

This Chilean film about a middle aged divorced woman looking for fulfillment, romantic and otherwise, has garnered enthusiastic reviews for its detailed and balanced character study. Here is one from the New York Times:

I enjoyed the movie Gloria, it was uplifting at the end. I was worried about her at the beach scene. And it was refreshing to see a 50+ sexy female on the screen, just like when Helen Hunt did something similar. We are not "dead" at 50, actually excitedly coming alive every day!
Also, I'm very happy I won the mini contest of choosing the top 6 Oscar winners. I really found it a no brainer. Although, I really enjoyed Nebraska, I laughed all the way through with my 18 yr old. Cheers.

I liked the movie and could relate to her struggles of dating as a divorced woman whose kids are living their own lives. The men out there are a minefield! It was very melancholy but she seemed to find herself in the end.

I totally disagree and do not feel like she found herself in the end. She went back to nightclubs, dancing, "drinking," and it can only be assumed going to bed with strangers. So how did she find herself?

Hey, we're not all land mines! Maybe trip hazards.... but aren't all humans blessed with flaws that have to be negotiated in any relationship? Some flaws more of a risk than others. It is nice to see a woman/character who can survive on her own. I do agree with Elizabeth in that I am not sure she was returning to a healthy lifestyle but probably a survivable one.

I liked the movie. It was entertaining, and yes it was sexual and there was nudity, but it didn't bother me. I felt sorry for her struggles, as I can relate to the complexity of middle aged dating!

As much I want to see this movie and all of you, I have been way overbooked since last week and I need a night at home. Do I sound really old? :) Julie, I'll be in touch soon about Philomena.

Can't make it either. Hunting new home out of the blue & too stressed. Maybe next time...

Guys, I'm sorry but I'm not feeling great today, and I think I'm going to just limp back to my hotel and skip the film. I hope you all enjoy it and I hope you'll do another one before I return to LA on the 28th!

Saw this on Saturday with a friend. Neither one of us particularly liked it. Gloria is essentially drinks too much, falling into bed with men she picks up in bars, and treats the one man she meets who is good, in a selfish, insensitive manner albeit he has some of his own issues. The critics says she lands on top, I say she remains on the bottom. Should you see it think about this. I wouldn't recommend it to my friends, however.

Happy to be visiting in Sacramento again so I join you nice folks for a movie! I'll probably get there early to have a bite at Tower Cafe. Anyone want to join me?
