Almost Full Sturgeon Moon Paddle at Cowan Lake

Enjoy a leisurely paddle on Cowan Lake. We will check out the progress of the lotus, watch the sunset and paddle under the 98% illuminated Sturgeon Moon. The paddle will be approximately 2 hours and distance will be decided by the group.

The August full moon is often called the Sturgeon Moon in North America. The Sturgeon Moon harks back to when some Native American tribes knew that this large fish roamed plentifully in the Great Lakes and Hudson Bay. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

This year, the August full moon full moon also gives us this year’s closest supermoon. As measured from the centers of the Earth and moon, the moon lies 356,896 kilometers (221,675 miles) away. The moon and Earth won’t make such a close encounter again until the full moon of September 28, 2015, at which time the two will only be 19 kilometers closer together.

Note: I will be camping all weekend at the Cowan Lake SP campground and will be meeting you at the ramp without my car.

Camping Option: You are more than welcome to get a campsite and join me. I will be exploring the creeks and lake all weekend if you would like to get in extra paddling or if you would like to come by and enjoy a campfire.

We will meet promptly at 7:30 PM and unload boats at the ramp. We will do a check of the Lotus blooms and then head out toward Austin Island and watch the sun set.

If you are running late, please call. I will provide my cell number closer to the event time.

• Start

We will push off from the shoreline no later than 7:45 PM.

• Finish

We should be out of the water 10:15 PM + or -.

• Duration

Expect to spend about 2-2.5 hours on the water.

• Difficulty

This paddle is suitable for paddlers with flat water experience.  You must be 18 years of age or older and sign the liability waiver.  Its not a hard paddle, however there are obstacles to maneuver.

• What You See

Birds, wildflowers, wildlife, sunset and the moon.

• Restrooms

There are restrooms available a short drive from the boat ramp.

• Food

Bring water and snacks.

• Equipment

A boat that tracks well would be ideal, but not necessary.  This is a flat water paddle and a recreational boat will do well.

You are required by state law to have a minimum of a white light on the rear of your kayak. You should also bring a headlamp for your safety and to help you move about in the dark.

PFD / hat / water / sunscreen / bug spray / dry clothes / dry shoes / dry bag / towel and safety equipment. Be prepared.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not your guide.  I am a friend to paddle with that has provided you with group companionship and kayaking opportunity.

Thanks everyone for coming out for another awesome night on Cowan Lake. The sunset was great and the bright, almost full moon was amazing. And, remember what Isaac Newton said about the apple, "What goes up, must come down." :)

I enjoyed this paddle a lot, the best part might have been at the end just floating and listening to the night, especially the owls!

Camping Option! I am in site 20 of the Cowan Lake campground both Friday and Saturday night. I am not planning anything formal but feel free if you want to stop by and enjoy a campfire. Look for the black Ford Ranger with an orange Wilderness Systems Tsunami.

If you would like to camp, you can get your own site or I can put a small tent or two on my site. I am allowed up to 6 people. There are also first come, first served primitive sites near the beach and the boat ramp. These are awesome for sitting out under the stars.

I will be leaving the campground ramp at 6:30pm on Saturday to paddle over and meet everyone, that is not camping, at the designated meetup location ramp on the other side of the lake (see ramp instructions in the description).
