*** NOTE: THE RIDE IS SUNDAY OF THANKSGIVING WEEKEND***
"Taste of Tonto" - We are happy to once again offer one of our famous and popular SHUTTLE rides!
We will assemble at 9:30 am at the northeast corner of Pima & Dynamite. If you are coming from Pima, turn east on Dynamite and proceed as if you were headed to Alma School. At the first left turn lane make a legal U-turn and come back down (west) on Dynamite and park in the sandy area on the right side of the road before you reach the traffic light at Pima.
This is a shuttle ride where we load up bikes and gear in select vehicles and drive to the start point of the ride, which is the Cave Creek Ranger's station on Horseshoe Dam Road. From this very scenic high elevation location in the Tonto National Forest we embark on our "downhill" journey. The route: Northern Exposure to Harris Hawk Trail, then east on some of the best roller coaster single track Tonto has to offer. We then circle around Harris Hawk Mountain and turn south on more exhilarating single track which exits Tonto and brings us to Trail 3. From 3 we pick up the connector to 22 (which always scores high in the ratings despite that one little cactus with extra long thorns on the left side of the trail). We then take 22 to the top of 25 (Girl's Route), allowing us to experience the rollercoaster excitement of 25 in its full glory. We then connect on 54 to the top of Western Express, and from there we return to the corner of Pima & Dynamite either via trail 14 (tons of fun) or trail 20 (standard amount of fun).
We then load up into the cars and head back up to the Ranger's Station to pick up the other vehicles. From the Ranger's Station, we will head to Cave Creek for a brew and burger.
We are hoping most cars can take at least (2) bikes so we can reduce the number of vehicles that will have to park at the Ranger's station.
Meet Up time at Pima & Dynamite: 9:30 am sharp.
Departure time from meetup location: 9:50 am
Arrive at Ranger's Station and be ready to ride: 10:15 am
Plan on riding about 4 hours including rest stops. The mileage estimate is between 20-22 miles. There will be a lot of downhill in this ride (no, really) but there will also be climbing along the way. For those of you who have ridden in this area, the fun factor is high but it is also WORK. If you are not in decent cardio shape or are a newer rider, please wait until you are in better shape and have more riding experience. There won't be many bailout points, so you'll have to be able to ride the entire route. Historically, we run a little later due to unforeseen mechanicals, fun re-grouping socialization, or weary riders : ) so if you are in a rush for the afternoon, this may not be your ride.
Make sure you have plenty of water (100 oz), gels or snacks. You can reach me (Carole) at [masked]) or Greg at [masked]) if you have any questions. If you are attending the ride, please enter one of these phone #'s in your phone in the event there is an issue during the ride.
