WORK SESSION: Preparation for (Open) Data Book Club 4 - Federal Elections

  • Sep 10, 2015 · 6:00 PM
  • La Gare MTL

With the federal elections coming in October, we partnered with Open Data Ottawa and Open Toronto to bring together a book club focused on Election data.

In preparation of our September book club, we invite you to a work session at La Gare. The (O)DBC will be held during the Semaine Quebecoise de l'Informatique Libre (week of the 21st, official date to be announced soon). Don't hesitate to get in touch if you are interested in giving a presentation related to the Federal Elections.

The goal of this evening is to explore the datasets available (link below), find teammates, brainstorm about projects ideas and start working on these projects. Don't forget to bring your laptop.

Recommended data sources:

- Census data from stats canada

- Votes by district

Project Ideas:

- Identify voting patterns (link between demographics data and votes) between FED.

- Find similar districts across Canada

- Map voting data

- Explore the political financing data (is there any difference in the donation between parties, what is the profile of donors, ...)

List of datasets and sources: This is a collaborative document, feel free to add to this list and post a link of your project (even if it is a work in progress).

For online collaboration, join our #odbc channel on Slack. Email [masked] to join MTL Data's slack.

Event Schedule

6:00-6:05pm | Introduction of the (O)DBC and the datasets

6:05-6:15pm | Everyone gets a chance to introduce themselves and pitch a project

6:15-8:00pm | Form a team a start working on a project

My apologies Matthieu and Vaughn; will have to skip this evening due to other more pressing professional commitments. I will do my best to be there during the week of the 21st though.

Too much on the go with my crazy day job project.

I wish you much success with this very relevant and needed endeavor.

I've got another engagement around 7:30 but I'd really like to present my various maps and analyses of the 2013 Montreal Municipal election for 10 minutes if possible near the beginning of the event :)

Hi Nicolas, we won't have any formal presentation during this event but we are looking for presenters for the event at the end of the month. You can still join us to continue working on this project, I'm sure some people would be interested in reusing some of the analyses you've done.
