Museum Hopping 10: Afternoon of Art in Marunouchi

Wassily Kandinsky is widely recognized as a pioneer of abstract painting. As a spiritual individual, he was interested in expressing inner feeling of human soul using colorful abstract forms on his canvas, rather than depicting the exterior world. The development of his abstract art was guided by the influence of music, which is abstract by nature. He often employed musical terms, "improvisations" and "composition," for the titles of his paintings. "Kandinsky and the Blue Rider from the Lenbachhaus, Munich," the exhibition currently held at Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, traces artistic development of Kandinsky to give birth to abstract painting. The focus of this exhibition is "The Blue Rider," an artist group Kandinsky formed with other link-minded artists to promote abstraction in art. This show provides us a good opportunity to learn about the formative period of kandinsky's art while enjoying figurative works done by the artist and his peers.

After the exhibition, I would like to check out an event called Lighting Objet 2010 in Marunouchi and Yuuraku-cho area. The event showcases works created with or illuminated by lights. This is rather a commercial events, so we probably can not expect to see serious art works. Regardless, it should give us a nice festive feeling in this holiday season.

Hope some of you are interested in spending an afternoon in Marunouchi with us.
