Chicago MySQL User Group Meetup Message Board › Topics, ideas, spaces, support for this MySQL group.

Topics, ideas, spaces, support for this MySQL group.

Members and Group Friends:

I wanted to poll the group, and see if we may be able to kick-start some ideas for 2011.

Open-source is alive and well.

DrupalCon-Chicago is done, O'Reilly's MySQL Conference is wrapping up this week.

O'Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo 2011 happening April 11-14 2011, Santa Clara, CA.

I give credit to those active in the community, and who have helped with their contributions and expertise. Tops on the list would include:

- IOUG (Independent Oracle Users Group) who had Chicago sessions, as well as the national Collaborate 2011 conference

- Percona, who's people have spoken to our group, and also to IOUG's and are active with blog/forums

MySQL (as now part of the Oracle suite of products) is looking for a revenue stream, and is offering 35% off training programs. I'll have to check and see if that is an offered class (which they have many) or self study programs. I'll put their recent announcement, I received via email on the message board, along with this email.

I will be looking for topics, speakers, presentations and members that want to take an active role, in keeping the group rolling for the sake of keeping informed, education, networking & bus. opportunities. For the purposes of a topic or sharing with the group, even a high-level 15 minute informative presentation can be a good overview that helps someone else have an understanding. We have group members at all levels of expertise.

As an applications developer, I'm probably using just a fraction of the full features of MySQL. Typically data modeling, Workbench, backups, and maybe some optimization.

---- I'd like to hear from others in the industry ( DBA's, administrators, etc. ) ---

Here's a list of search keywords that could be matched with MySQL and bring back a plethora of topics:

Clustering, BI, OLAP, Data Warehousing, ETL, Data Modeling, Web Services, Performance, Administration, Case Study, ...

Re: Locations

There have been a few good places, that have welcomed us in the past; I'll keep those in mind.

any place that would be quiet enough to host a presentation & group discussion would also be great.

I'm going to be looking for convenient, cheap group hosting locations in loop, N.side, Ohare & 'burbs, and I will post this also on on the Suburban MySQL group, with a few more suburban references.

You may also be interested in other MUG's (meetup groups) with these topics: LAMP, PHP, Cloud, Linux, LUG, Startups, ie: Startup Circle, development, programming, etc.

Hope to see you soon.
