Designing Databases for Intel Optane & 3D XPoint Memory (++beer, food & swag++)

Free beer & drinks, food, swag, $100-Amazon raffle and more!

Brian Bulkowski, CTO & Co-Founder, Aerospike

A Database Month event

Brian Bulkowski, the CTO and co-founder of Aerospike, will discuss database design and storage class memory.

Intel and Micron's new technology uses resistive memory principles, and has recently come to market providing an entirely new geometry in price and performance. As the leader in hybrid memory architectures, Aerospike has worked with Intel to optimize for NVMe Optane memory, as well as future configurations.

Brian will discuss what implementation patterns have proven effective, along with use cases in capital markets, telco and fraud detection.

Join Brian in this session to learn about:

• Internal workings of Intel Optane

• How to optimize databases for memory-based storage like Optane

• Learnings derived from testing Intel's super-fast Optane SSDs

Released in March, Intel Optane SSDs offer a 5x to 8x performance lift in mixed read/write workloads and an order of magnitude faster with more consistent response times. Aerospike has been working closely with Intel for over a year to conduct numerous data-performance tests using Intel Optane.

In this session, you will learn how to optimize hybrid memory database architectures for memory-storage and gain an understanding of the internals of 3D XPoint, plus see some very-impressive benchmark test results!

Brian Bulkowski, CTO & Co-Founder, Aerospike

CTO & Co-Founder of Aerospike, Brian Bulkowski, has a background of 25 years in the Silicon Valley as a team leader, architect, and senior manager entirely in the area of large-scale server infrastructures (commodity routers at Novell, video servers at Starlight Networks, large-scale broadband at Liberate, and distributed computation at Aggregate Knowledge).

Brian founded Aerospike after learning first hand, the scaling limitations of sharded MySQL systems at Aggregate Knowledge. As director of performance at this media intelligence SaaS company, Brian led the team in building and operating a clustered recommendation engine.

Prior to Aggregate Knowledge, Brian was a founding member of the digital TV team at Navio Communications and chief architect of Cable Solutions at Liberate Technologies where he built the high-performance embedded networking stack and the Internet-scale broadcast server infrastructure. Before Liberate, Brian was a lead engineer at Novell, where he was responsible for the AppleTalk stack for Netware 3 and 4.

Brian delivered a very interesting and technical presentation about Intel Optane memory and how it improves Aerospike's performance. Very impressive technology. The datacenter Optane module has an equally interesting under-$100 32GB M.2 desktop Optane module that works with the latest Intel CPU's and chipsets and improves the performance of desktop data analytics, photo and video editing.
