Maple Mountain Summit Discovery Hike (from the end of Chilco Rd)
Details
It's unpredictable weather time of the year---as of now, Monday's forecast looks OK. Event will be cancelled if raining. Check this page by 7am day of event for updates.
As this is a discovery hike, please do not have any time commitments. I haven't hosted this hike before, and while I've hiked most of the trails, it's been awhile, so expect some route-finding.
Approx 14km/535m elevation gain @ "a notch above" moderate pace.
You s/b @ minimum a strong “B/moderate” level hiker or higher to enjoy this hike. Not suitable for anyone with balance/cardio/knee deficiencies.
Short break @ viewpoint & @ summit
Pet-free/NO DOGS please. No Pit Toilet.
Carpooling: pre-arrange/comment below if you can drive/need a ride. Passengers pitch in for gas $$$. Suggestion for Nanaimo folks...carpool from south-end Country Grocer parking lot. Park/meet in slots closest to highway.
REMINDER: be prepared to show some of the First Aid supplies that you carry in your pack.
We will be hiking on access roads and active mountains bike trails, pass by Rainsford Lake (could be swampy), and a couple of viewpoints on the way up. A short break @ the summit before heading back down.
Expect puddles, wet undergrowth & slippery conditions with varied and unstable terrain (stones, roots & navigate over some blowdown). Hiking boots/shoes with good tread required. Poles may be beneficial.
