Lots of people write and talk about software quality. Often they discuss how general attributes of quality apply to software, but software developers usually remark that software is different. What makes software different? Can you really understand software quality without an advanced degree in Computer Science?
Software is constrained by correctness, but it is more free than any art -- software has the potential to be beautiful and mathematically precise (another kind of beauty).
In this talk, I give the developer’s perspective on software quality -- the view of the artist instead of the critic. Like an art class, I show examples of beautiful code and not so beautiful code. I repeat some advice from the old masters.
