Join your hiking mates for a fun exploration of beautiful Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area, followed by Saturday night camping at the nearby Pickett State Park and finally local hikes at Pickett SP on Sunday.

*Depart Time/Carpool: 7:30 am Central Time. Hermitage Kroger located at Northlake Village, 5544 Old Hickory Blvd, Hermitage, TN 37076. That’s off Exit 221, Interstate 40.

*The carpool will arrive at the Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area parking lot between 10:10 CT and 10:30 CT. The drive from the Pogue parking lot to Pickett SP is only 5 minutes.

Saturday agenda: Pogue Creek mileage 7-8 miles. Trails on the lineup: Overlook, Upper Canyon, Killdeer Arch, Mesa Top. The overlook views here are frankly some of the best in Tennessee. There may be some late fall colors turning by this date.

Saturday Night: Overnight tent camping located at Pickett State Park. Cost is $15-$25 per tent space. Please secure your own tent space reservation for Saturday, November 10th, 2018, by going to this link: Feel free to arrange your own local accommodations outside the park but remember that we will be starting the Sunday hike from the camping area at Pickett in the morning.

Sunday agenda: Pickett SP mileage, ~7 miles. Trails on the potential lineup: Hazard Cave, Natural Bridge, Lake View, Bluff, Ladder trails. Numerous natural (rock) bridges and windows can be found along the trails in this state park.

*Activity Time: Approximately 4 - 5 hours of hike time each day.

*Total Weekend Mileage: ~13 to 15 miles

*Hike Difficulty Rating: Moderate to Strenuous. Long stretches of moderate, occasional strenuous. There is significant elevation gain and loss (all under 1,000 feet of difference) at Pogue and several ladders to negotiate. We will seek out the hidden waterfall, which may involve some momentary off-trail and slick rocks.

Note: There is the possibility of limited off-trail exploration. If there has been recent rain, then there is the possibility of getting your shoes a little wet when crossing small creeks. You will need to furnish your own snacks and meals for 2 day hikes & 1 overnight camp. There is information on the Pickett State Park website regarding the purchase of certified wood for your campfires.

*If carpooling, be sure to offer some cash gas money to your driver.
* No kids under 13 and no dogs on this trip.

*Please RSVP with integrity. That means if you sign up, please show up. Thanks! No one likes waiting around at a carpool for someone who is not coming.

In 2015, Pogue Creek SNA and Pickett SP became certified dark sky viewing locations by the International Dark-Sky Association. The lack of light pollution in this corner of Tennessee makes that grass field the perfect stargazing spot!
