Join your hiking mates for a fun #HIKETOBER early fall season exploration of beautiful Virgin Falls State Natural Area. This is one of middle Tennessee’s outdoor gems!
I have campsites 4 and 5 at Martha's Pretty Point reserved for Sunday night (and a Full Hunter's Moon!) if anyone would like to backpack in with me and stay until Monday. As of Friday 10/11/2019, There is room for 2 more adults (Send me a message if you want to backpack in and camp). If you just want to hike with us on Sunday that is fine too! I just talked to the ranger and the Burn ban is not in effect at Virgin, so we can do a small campfire Sunday Night!
*This is not car camping, you will have to pack in your kit*
*Depart Time/Carpool: Sunday 10/13/2019 7:30 am Central Time. Home Depot Lebanon (955 S Hartmann Dr, Lebanon, TN 37090).
*The carpool should arrive at the Virgin Falls Trailhead between 9:15 am CT and 9:30 am CT. The drive includes a quick 10 minute stop at McDonalds in Sparta (If you are travelling from Cookeville or Knoxville we will meet here at approximately 8:30 AM).
For those meeting at the trail head, the parking address is: 2080 Scotts Gulf Road, Sparta, Tn. 38583
Virgin Falls Trailhead is located south off of US Hwy 70 between Sparta, and Crossville. From Sparta head east through town out Hwy 70, approximately 11 miles. Turn right on Eastland Road (at the Headstart building, and the turn has signs), proceed 6 miles to the junction of Scotts Gulf road (also signed), then on 2 miles to the parking lot on the right side (west side) of the road.
Agenda: We will hike the longer trail to Martha's Pretty Point, where we can drop any camping gear or do a quick set up if the previous nights campers have cleared out. We will then head down the hill to Big Laurel Falls, and then on to Virgin Falls where we will take a lunch break at the top and eat. We will then head back up hill to check out Sheeps Cave, and then back up the steep section past Big Laurel falls, across the cable crossing and back to the trailhead. *Those camping can take the shortcut before the cable crossing and back up to Martha's Pretty Point*
*Activity Time: Approximately 5-6 hours of hike time
*Total Mileage: ~9 to 11 miles
*Hike Difficulty Rating: The state labels this hike Strenuous. There is significant elevation gain and loss of 1300 feet from trailhead to the falls, intermittent rocky and muddy terrain, and possible stream crossings to negotiate.
*If carpooling, be sure to offer some gas money to your driver.
* Kids under 13 are allowed if they have prior trail/camping experience.
* Well-behaved dogs ARE allowed on this trip. My boxer mix will be coming along.
*Please RSVP with integrity. That means if you sign up, please show up. Thanks! No one likes waiting around at a carpool for someone who is not coming.
