Just north of Shirlington lies Nauck, the oldest African American neighborhood in Arlington.
Nauck is a semi-triangular neighborhood, bordered by 16th Road South to the north, Army Navy Country Club to the east, Four Mile Run Drive to the south and Walter Reed Drive to the west. The neighborhood was a stop on the migration route, which took shape at the end of the Civil War, from the south to Freedman’s Village.
After our walk, we will stop at Margaret's Soul Food. The restaurant is carry-out so we will take the food back to Jennie Dean park.
This neighborhood is about 2 miles from metro. It is well served by Capital Bikeshare (http://capitalbikeshare.com/stations) and by ART bus 77 (http://www.arlingtontransit.com/pages/routes/art-77/), which travels from the Orange line. Nearby Shirlington can be reached by many buses coming from the Pentagon.
Total distance will be less than 2 miles but the route is slightly hilly.
This event is cross-posted on Capital Area Hikers and History Buffs (http://www.meetup.com/dchike-history/). The leader of the walk does not profess to be an authority on the history of this area, but this is slated to be the best Nauck tour of the day.
