August 2013 Meetup: Note 1 p.m. start time and please RSVP now!

  • Aug 17, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Here are our ATC swap themes for August 2013:

1. Favorite word
2. Dwelling(s)
3. Third swap: Since we'll be making cards for swapping with the Georgia Peaches, there isn't a third swap this time.

Please RSVP now so we have an approximate headcount (you can always change your RSVP later).

Meetup Plans: Georgia Peaches Exchange and Found Poetry

Georgia Peaches: We have a LOT of cards from the Georgia Peaches! To make more trades, we will spend the time we have together at this meetup making individual cards to swap with our sister group. A variety of supplies will be out so that attendees may bring just a few things and be inspired to create within the "limits" of what is available between your own "stash" you bring and what we have. Let's get creative in August and get swapping!

Found Poetry: By popular demand, we will also have "found poetry" packs to inspire creativity. Envelopes with ephemera and random pages from a variety of books will be available. In case you're not familiar with found poetry, the basics are as follows: use the random pages you find in your envelope and cut up the sentences, phrases and words to create lines of poetry. These are often humorous, especially when placed together juxtaposed with images that seem unrelated to the topic. They can also be profound! There will be a few samples on hand to help you get into the groove.

What a neat, creative group of women! I really enjoyed my first Meetup. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again at the October retreat down here in my neighborhood.

It was lovely meeting you! I am honored to have received one of your "Dwellings" cards.

All of our new members were great to get to know, to talk with and to be inspired by! While I won't make meetups between now and the retreat in October, and then again not until December (when we have the BEST holiday party activities and awesome food and friendship), I hope to see you either at the retreat or in December. I'm in grad school this year, and then will be "back to ATCs" in May 2014 when that is all over. WELCOME! It was also terrific to see "old" friends and know that I value your creativity and friendship and look forward to times when we can see one another!

Also, the forecast is for 81 degrees with high humidity--so we will definitely be in the classrooms. I have spoken to our hosts and although I can't guarantee it, we should be able to crank up the A/C more than we did last time. I still recommend dressing in layers, as it will still likely be too warm for some and too cold for others. And I also again respectfully request that we limit what we bring into the rooms, just to keep things safe and comfortable. For the quick-paced activities we'll be doing, we shouldn't need more than a couple of boxes, bags, totes, kits, etc., per person. But if you DO think you'll need more, that's fine--just consider leaving some of it in one of the other classrooms or even in your car, and you can retrieve it as needed. (For those of you going on the retreat, this is a great dress rehearsal for paring down your stuff.)

Hi, Ellen -- In this case, the answer is: Both! If you wish to participate in either or both of the two swaps (favorite words and dwellings), it's best of if you arrive with FINISHED cards for each swap. (There are instructions for participating in swaps. including how to prepare your cards for the swap, in the file at the very top of the Message Board, under the "Discussions" tab above). And, as Kate notes, we will make cards during the Meetup for our sister group. They have sent us many more cards than we've sent them, so we're going to use this opportunity to catch up. In this case, you may make or bring as many cards as you like to swap--say, up to 10--and you'll get back the same number from the Peaches. We will have blank ATCs, glue sticks, scissors and some embellishments and other items available for use for both our projects.

The Georgia Peaches are a sister group in Georgia of ATC artists. They send envelopes of cards to us several times a year looking to swap. We create cards to swap with them one-for-one. This means you can exchange any number of cards for an equal number. We got a shipment and are in process of swapping cards out. This meetup, we are concentrating on this process to get some swapping going.

You are welcome to bring completed ATCs for the themed swaps listed and also for the Georgia Peach swap. We will be making found poetry cards at the meetup and also you are welcome to work on Georgia Peach cards.

Looking forward to this meetup as it is my "last" until the retreat with my school semester starting back up again. I've been having a blast practicing found poetry with lots of samples to share and a bunch of packets ready for YOUR creativity! This group is such a bright spot in my hectic life as a grad student and I look forward to seeing everyone and meeting new members, too!

To clarify: I'm just recommending that people simply consider being a little selective about what they bring into the meeting room this time--and that's only if we're in the smaller air-conditioned room. No one will be monitoring who brings how much. Bring what you feel you need to make some ATCs. If that turns out to be a lot, just consider leaving some stuff outside the room and retrieving it as needed (as we do at the retreat). This will keep our workspace safe and comfortable for all. Again, IF the hall is available on Saturday, and IF it's not too hot, we can consider moving in there. We'll see how things look on Saturday.

    Hi, folks--
Space is likely to be tight at this one, so we may have to split into two groups (in adjacent rooms). No problem, though -- all are welcome and we'll be fine. BUT this would be a good one to for limiting what you bring. You may want to consider packing a kit for the day and leaving your other stuff in your car or in one of the extra classrooms nearby. That way, you can still access it if you need it--but it will give us more room to move around. Also, the space is air-conditioned, but it still got pretty warm in there last time. I have asked to have the A/C cranked up this time, but if it's really hot that day, you may want to wear your lightest duds, just in case. I'm very much looking forward to it, especially to meeting our new members. See you soon!

We can't go into the large room? or is it supposed to be really hot again?

      August 10, 2013

    • Anne

I don't know the weather forecast for next weekend yet. But in past years, when we held the July and August Meetups in the big room people complained that it was too hot and stuffy. That's why we booked the smaller rooms in the air-conditioned space. If no one else has booked the big room and it's not too hot, we can certainly consider moving in there.

  • Kate R.

We can always use the found poetry cards to swap...I guess that is what I was thinking, although people are welcome to bring pre-made cards or finish cards at this meetup, of course. I think Anne just felt having more space and less stuff might be helpful with the meetup in the smaller rooms. The rooms are small yet we have seemed to work it out fine in the past. I am sure it will be fine this time, too. Looking forward to the swapping, found poetry and seeing everyone including new meetup goers!

    August 10, 2013

  • Karen

We're also supposed to be making cards for the Peaches, which throws a little hitch in the "limiting" request. But if we start making them ahead of time we can just finish them there.

    August 10, 2013

  • Kate R.

I think limiting what you bring it a great idea as we are doing found poetry so a glue stick and pre-prepped backgrounds or plain cards are all that will be needed. You can embellish at home later as desired.

Hello! Is anyone going to the Mini Maker Faire in Providence Saturday? What's all that about?

    August 5, 2013

  • Merideth

is there a theme for the GA Peaches or artist's choice? How many?

    July 22, 2013

    • Kate R.

The cards we create will likely include found poetry since that is our activity this time and so that "theme" is definitely going to be included.

      July 22, 2013

    • Anne

For Georgia Peaches--as many cards as you want to trade. Put in one, you'll get one back. Put in six, you'll get six back. It's up to you!
