The Sammis plant, operated by FirstEnergy through its subsidiary Ohio Edison, is fueled by coal and generates up to 2233 megawatts of electricity. It includes one of the tallest chimneys in the world at 1000 feet. State Route 7 passes through the plant via a tunnel. The first two units were constructed in 1959 and 1962 on the former site of Stratton Clay Works. Additional units were added in 1967, 1969 and 1971.
