Backpacking in Zion!!!

Please keep your RSVP's up to date for this event. Do not RSVP unless you have checked your calendar.

This will be the most challenging endeavor we have ever taken on. We will be a team on this..."All for one, and one for all!" That being said, it is your responsibility to be sure you are fit and prepared for this adventure!

The Plan:

We will be doing the entire Trans-Zion Trek from the East Entrance to Lee Pass (East to West.)  This will be a strenuous hike with lots of elevations, but it will be an adventure you will never forget if you are up for it.

Here is a good video of Angels Landing.  You do not have to do this portion of the hike if you are not comfortable with it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W07wOlcQh4E

Here are things you will see from the trails we will be hiking:

http://youtu.be/U7HYU3bL5jI

We will arrive in Las Vegas on Wednesday afternoon, rent a car, and stay the night at a hotel in Vegas.  First thing Thursday morning, we will fuel up and head to Zion to jump right into the hike.  After the first day of hiking, we will end up near the main visitor section of the park where we can make any necessary supply adjustments before continuing on with our trek.  We will be in the wilderness for 3 days (we have a 4th day buffer just in case.)  We will be done no later than Monday.  I will stay Monday night with Mike in Vegas and play around a little Tuesday before heading back home.

This is my flight itinerary via Spirit Airlines on Expedia.com:

Houston to Vegas
Wednesday April 2, 2014 Departing: 7:10 AM
Arriving: 8:32 AM
Flight 193 Duration: 3 h 22 m

Tuesday April 8, 2014 Departing: 4:25 PM
Arriving: 9:14 PM
Flight 292 Duration: 2 h 49 m

Ok...Spirit has increased their checked bag fee to $40 each way. You are limited to 62 linear inches (length+width+height) and 40 pounds. I suggest putting your heaviest items in your carry on if you are going to push that 40 pound limit.

    April 1, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

I park using Greenbeeparking.com. It costs less then $30 for the entire trip. You park at a nearby hotel, and they shuttle you to the airport for free. It is a great deal. Stacey and I are both parking at the Homewood Suites option. Just FYI.

    April 1, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

Remember, if you are flying Spirit... They charge for carry on bags. The difference in price between the carry on charge or checking the bag is negligible. I will put my backpack inside a larger duffle bag with all of my other stuff I want to bring for the trip...laptop, running around clothes, etc. Also, if you check in your bag at the airport, it is about twice the cost of checking it online. If you check a bag online, plan to add $60 round trip to your ticket price. It will be over $100 round trip if you do it at the airport. Do it tonight. Also, if you need any assistance from a Spirit agent at the airport (other than just handing them the bag) there is an additional $10 charge per engagement. If you use the auto check-in system to print your boarding pass, there is no charge. You are allowed a personal item, laptop case, purse, etc, but it must fit in the size checker, or they will charge up to $75 to check it.

My 70 ounce (2L) platypus platy storage bottle broke after 8 years. REI Houston was out of them. Whole Earth had them. I bought all of their inventory, so if you need one jot me a note back by say Tuesday. They are $14.00 even with tax. (http://www.rei.com/product/820769/platypus-platy-bottle-70-fl-oz)

I know, from previous conversations, Jen and Justin are set.
    John?
    Stacey?
    Boaz?

I like the 2L over the the 3L because they are 1.3oz weight versus 6 0z so there is a little over a half pound savings (9 oz) over 1.5 Gal. Also they weigh less than a 1 L powerade bottle.

ok, all platy storage bottles I bought are committed.

Ok. Paul and I have some updated info about the trip. If possible, are any of you guys available to meet tonight for a little while at around 6-7pm? We are not going to be discussing campsites...once again, we won't know that until we get there. This will not be a meeting about unknowns. We will discuss final thoughts on clothing, gear, water, and food...just the survival aspects of the trip. I will be shopping at REI tonight, so I thought we might meet somewhere nearby. By the way, does anyone have a down-type vest and a Shell that I can borrow for the trip? If not, I'll have to buy them tonight. (ouch $$$) Oh...we will also be discussing Mike's role in the trip since he has not healed sufficiently to do the trek. Please text me to confirm you can come tonight, and I'll set the exact place. Let me know if you can meet at 6 or if we need to push the time back. [masked]

ICE - In Case of Emergency (Emergency Contact number)

I was just going down my SC Outdoor leader list. When we get there I suggest we make a copy of ICE numbers for everyone and for everyone have a copy of that list. But this is the important point for today/before the trip - Tell your ICE to pick up unknown numbers while we are out on the trip. Many let unknown numbers go to voice mail and depending on cell phone coverage and other obstacles there might not be a time to call back in a timely manner. Point is they might miss an emergency phone call from a cell phone or sat phone they do not recognize. As a side note for those that do not have a listing on their phone address book for ICE I think it is a good idea all around.

    Two things
    1. Weather forecast
    2. hypothermia

    1. Talked to a weather briefer tonight about a long range forecast because I was seeing differing forecasts for the area. - from lows in the 40's to lows in the low 20's.The short version is plan on lows in the upper teens to high 20's at night at altitude (boo!)with out a chance of high winds (cheers!). We will miss a front that will pass Tues and Wed at present speeds. Another front will approach on Friday and dissipate by Sat. Highs seem to be steady at 50s-60s (cheers) .

    2. Hypothermia - If you do not know what "cotton kills" means - reach out to someone in the group. These temps are prime for hypothermia. Lets look out and keep an eye on each other as well as be smart ourselves. I suggest we eat our bigger meal at lunch when it is warmer and daylight to avoid prolonged evening activities while our bodies are cooling down from hiking in possibly damp clothing. Also hiking a little later in evening and leaving later in AM.

Talked to a ranger yesterday. Probably the most important and new detail is ...water. The webpage is out of date. Because of the extended drought and weak winter snow fall. 1. all the springs on West Rim and the one on the east rim are dry - ouch.
    2. Hop valley, at least in this ranger's opinion, is to contaminated to even filter for water. So , that leaves the area along La Verkin and the spring on Wildcat as our only water sources. That translates to 15.5 and 16.2 miles between water sources. Depending on where we break up the trip for sleeping I am bringing 1-2 gal water storage. The cooler wx will help but camping in middle of those water sources will mean one has to carry more water. Water is 8 lb per gallon. A lot of people recommend 1 gal per day. (FWIW)

The ranger stated that other than run-off from a rain for a short reprieve the water situation will not correct itself until next year this time - bummer.

    March 27, 2014

    • Justin

Thanks for the info, I'll add another 3L bladder. Will put me @ 1.5 gal

I just found out I won't be able to make it because of a recently schedule important work meeting :( I tried making it work (coming out early) - but we are having prep meetings for this meeting. Also, I can't remember the name of the store, maybe it was Zion Outdoor in Springdale, but they'll let you use fuel canisters for free. They are donated by people who don't want to travel with them (presumably because they are prohibited on planes).

Hi Jennifer, I lead a backpacking trip of six people there in 2011. It was so-o-o much fun. We also flew into Vegas and drove to Zion.

We hiked east to west: Started at the Grotto then went on West Rim Trail and camped at West Rim Camp Area Site 4. (I had in my notes to the group that there was extra hiking available in the area because I was worried six miles wasn’t going to be enough hiking. Ha! We were exhausted by the time we got to camp.) The sunset at Site 4 was probably one of the more memorable parts of the trip...

We continued to West Rim Trail and Wild Cat Canyon Trail to Wildcat Canyon Camp Area. It was hard finding a site in this area because there wasn’t a designated place, and you also couldn’t be visible from the trail. However, we managed to find a spot in a field of elk poop.

That was followed by hiking on Wildcat Canyon, Wildcat Canyon Connector, and Hop Valley Trails to La Verkin Creek Camp Area. The last day we hiked on La Verkian Trail to the terminus (Lee Pass).

It also rained the last day – the creeks swelled quite a bit but were passable (waist deep in the beginning).

I’ll email you my trip details in case there something there you can use. I put info in there about the three reliable water sources.

Also, it was early May, and people were cold in the mornings and at night.

I have reserved a hotel room for April 2 and April 7. I was only able to get one room for each night. It maybe a little cramped, so if anyone wants an extra room let me know, I think I can get a discount on it.

I just reserved a standard SUV. We will need to set up a shuttle, so I think 2 SUV's is better than 2 cars. There was only about a $7 a day difference with fox rental from an economy car to and SUV. I just don't see how we would be able to cram 7 of us into a car for the trip between shuttle points. The total of the reservation for the whole trip with taxes and fees is $224. How does that sound? Someone else will need to reserve the second vehicle.

I just booked this flight on Spirit Airlines through Expedia. Spirit allows a personal item, but they charge for carry-ons, etc. If you check your bag online, the cost is $30 each way. It is about twice that if you wait to pay for it at the airport. The cost of the flight was $186...It will end up being $246 with my checked bag.

This is the general plan...minus the endurance running. There is a group of people that run the 48 miles from beginning to end. The record is about 8 hours. While most resources talk about taking the trek from West to East, Andrew Skurka (who has done it several time) makes a good case for going East to West. www.AndrewSkurka.com

This looks awesome! How does pricing go for something like this? I assume we each are responsible for flight prices.. and Hotel? Is there a break down of it, by chance? Thanks :)

I would really like a concrete rsvp for this since it will be a pretty intense experience, and it will take a lot of planning.
