SUMMARY:Harriman Foliage Hike [~11 miles] [Car Pooling]
DESCRIPTION:NYC Hiking And Nature Meetup\nCome join me for a fall foliage
hike! We'll do a loop around Island Pond and over Black Rock\, hitting a b
 unch of view points.\n\nContact [Andre](http://www.meetup.com/New-York-Cit
y-Hiking/members/1650420) with any questions about this meetup.\n\n**Event
guidelines:**\n\n* **This is a social event for hikers\, not a guided hik
e**. We plan to stay together as a group\, but everyone needs to be a self
-sufficient hiker with adequate skills\, equipment\, and contingency plans
to hike alone with a map or offline-GPS app (and the knowledge to use the
 m) just in case.\n* **If you are not comfortable hiking** **self-sufficien
tly** **or are not experienced enough to judge the skill and physical requ
irements in the route description**\, check out the [Appalachian Mountain
Club’s](https://www.outdoors.org/) hikes or one of the many professional
guides operating in the area.\n\n\\*\\*\\*\n**Standard day-hiking gear:**
\n\n* Hiking footwear (boots or trail shoes)\, non-cotton clothing\, sunsc
 reen\, bug spray\, sunhat\, sunglasses. ([Permethrin insecticide](https://
amzn.to/3XNcflS) treatment against ticks is great.)\n* Rain gear and an ex
tra warm layer\, including winter hat and gloves in colder weather.\n* Lun
 ch\, Snacks\, and 2nd breakfast. 2 liters/ 2 quarts of water minimum\, 3 l
iters for a hot day. Electrolytes for hot days\, hot drinks for cold days.
\n* **GPS app with offline maps** & battery pack: **Avenza Maps App** is f
ree and there is a [free Harriman map in the in-app store](https://store.a
 venza.com/products/harriman-state-park-trail-map-new-york-state-parks-map?
queryID=undefined&objectID=36438857941148). **CalTopo** ($20/yr) is an exc
ellent general purpose GPS program. **Mapy** **App** has basic offline tra
il maps that are adequate.\n* **Map & Compass**: [NYNJTC Harriman-Bear Mou
ntain Trails](https://amzn.to/422cHxd) or [National Geographic Harriman](h
 ttps://amzn.to/3MOsk7d)\n\n***\n\n**General FAQ:**\n\n* No dogs allowed\,
sorry\n* No guests beyond the RSVP guest limit and no one under 18 allowed
\n* Hikes are generally rescheduled for thunderstorms\, heat index >95f\,
or AQI >80\n\n\\*\\*\\*\n**Route Info:**\n\n* **The Stats:** About 11 mile
s\, depending on conditions\, with 1.3k' elevation gain at a moving pace o
 f 2 mph.\n* **Track:** [Lake Skanatati > Island Pond > Black Rock](https:/
 /www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=13.6/-74.1264/41.2485&pubLink=3HIP0BKoSPRojEQmTV
D12npc&routeId=f1037064-6e5e-4de1-9655-b17f18f8e61b)\n* A lot of people li
ke use AllTrails\, but there is no route for this hike. You can download "
Lake Skannatati and Island Pond Loop" to at least get you back to the car\
, but get the (free) Avanza Map as well.\n* **For Your Contingency Plannin
g:** Shorter routes and bailout points are available. Cell service is gene
rally available but can be spotty.\nNavigation and Route Finding: Blazed t
rails.\n\n\\*\\*\\*\n**Logistics:**\n\n* **Meeting Location:** Meet at 9:3
 0am\, [Arden-Surebridge / Long Path Trailheads](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wY
 omgUJ91fFiUdnEA)\n* Andre's Cell: ‪(720) 263-7347‬\; texts preferred.\
n* **Public Transit**: None. However\, it might be possible to arrange pic
