Will the future be jobless?

Since the 1980s we have had hidden mass unemployment government carefully concealed by the use of higher education, 'the sick' and other benefits plus temp jobs.

Employment goes up with recovery sure. But are we cycling around permanent mass unemployment now - and without the money for generous welfare?

And especially because a lot of low-skill jobs and many high-skill jobs can increasingly be mechanised by the use of software. Meter readers, tube drivers and even lawyers and doctors. Vehicle drivers are next.

Gary you'll have to ask our organiser Yusuf.

It probably is the biggest topic. I was absolutely gutted that so few turned up.

We had an extremely good and extended debate but unfortunately there were only five of us. Why did more than three-quarters of the people who RSVPd not turn up? Those who organise these things go to a lot of trouble for you. Button clicking addiction?

Personally, I didn't RSVP but it is a big shame that people like us living in the suburb of London can't make it when the gathering takes place in the middle of the week. Fingers crossed I will be able to attend next time ... Feel free to read some of my articles on my blog http://lambertmbela.w...

Any plans to put this on again? I've just joined the group and this is HUGE topic that can potentially impact upon everyone. Sorry I missed it.

An utterly complacent article by one of the metropolitan well-offs. The comments reflect the realities far better than the article. Very common in newspapers now!

We've chipped in a couple of pounds in the past for the room sometimes.

As long as the government does not try to replace entrepreneurs but rather encourage R&D, innovation and jobs for the future in partnerships with private sector, there will always be jobs!!!

How long do I get! Quite a lot I can talk about. Twenty minutes would be nice. This is a large field with lots worth drawing attention to and I've been hard at work.

Huge debate there David but my point will be not about mistaken policy but about technical development.

Employment is provided by people (entrepreneurs). Unemployment rises when the state gets involved*, commonly when the state takes our money (i.e. tax) and buys votes by employing people directly (whilst promulgating the myth that this 'helps' with employment, when the opposite is the case). I wouldn't normally discuss online like this, but I can't come, so at least it is food for thought :-) .................*Or unions organize to prohibit good management and make a business uncompetitive. ...........In the spirit of Socrates, I look forward to learning how wrong I am :-) :-)

I will argue that there is going to be a devastating shortage of viable jobs.

Hi all. Emailed the Shooting star and the cellar room is free on the eve of June 3rd and June 9th. Any of these dates good? Do we have two people interested in leading the debate?
