Extended Weekend Trip to Sedona, AZ

  • Lowes

12th St. and I40 West, Albuquerque, NM (map)

    35.104435 -106.657661

  • The plan is to drive over to Flagstaff/Sedona on Wednesday and either stay in motel rooms or camp at a developed site.  On Thursday we will hike up the West Fork Oak Creek Trail.  We must hike up at least six miles before we are allowed to camp.  We may have to swim on this trail so we will bring dry clothes and a raft of some sort.  This is the most popular trail in the area but most of the traffic is on the lower 3 miles.  After setting up camp we will explore the canyon.  On Friday, we'll hike down, explore the area as time permits and camp in one of the campgrounds.

On Saturday, we'll hike up either the Bell Trail or the West Clear Creek Wilderness trail, find a spot, explore the area and spend the night.  On Sunday, we will hike out and drive home.

You must be able to swim.

I've never been to Sedona, so this will be exploratory.

I am opening this event early due to the need to get campground reservations.  However, I will be screening people, monitoring their progress in making reservations and removing folks who do not seem to be totally committed.

I am starting with a very small group but may increase it later.

As soon as a few people sign up we'll start working on locations for the two nights that we are not "up a creek".

Keith, starting to think about the trip. Do you still think we will have to swim? not sure how to do that and keep our packs dry? Also you don't mention how much mileage you think we will hike daily. hopefully your planning on getting a good amount of hiking in :)

I really hate to miss this one but a three day search and rescue training came up for the weekend & I really need this one. Three day technical & medical training the following weekend too.

I have hiked up the West Fork of the Oak Creek many times. I have never had to swim but near the top the canyon narrows in and you will need to wade but probably not much deeper the knee deep.

I need to check to see if I can get the time off so I'm not going to say yes, but I'd like to be put on the waitlist, esp. if you increase the group. Sedona is gorgeous. There's a great chute in a park nearby that i've been eager to visit in the warmer months so the prospect of having to do some wading or swimming in the area sounds great to me!

I'll save a spot for you for a week or two. Just let me know when you find out.

I would be driving up from Tucson. I'm an experienced backpacker and good swimmer.
