Announcing a new Meetup for The New Mexico Backpackers Meetup Group!

What: Weekend Backpacking Trip to Mora Flats (Pecos)

When: Friday, April 23,[masked]:00 PM

Mora Flats (Pecos Wilderness)
Santa Fe National Forest Pecos Ranger District
Pecos, NM 87552

Mora Flats is a huge open valley meadow with several streams meandering through it. Heavily forested mountains with some rocky outcrops surround this beautiful valley. The trail leading to the valley affords a number of nice views of the Flats before eventually dropping down into the valley. We'll begin our hike by crossing a small meadow with an aspen grove and then continue along a winding ridge high above Rio Mora canyon. After 3 miles or so we then begin our descent into the valley. There are a number of excellent campsites in the valley with the stream nearby.

Please Note: Anyone attending our trips must have a signed Waiver and Release form on file with us. This waiver covers all trips and activities for 2010, so you only need to sign it once. If you have not already signed this form, it can be downloaded from our Files section and turned in to the organizer when you arrive for the trip.

If you RSVP Yes please plan on attending. Please read our "RSVP" policy located in our "About" section.

The deadline for changing a Yes RSVP to a No RSVP is April 9, 2010

Trip Dates: April 23 (Friday evening) thru April 25 (Sunday hike out)

Campground/Trailhead Location: Iron Gate Campground (we may end up camping at the trailhead)

Notice: There is a $8.00 per night campsite fee for this campground, plus a $2.00/day parking fee at the trailhead

Directions to Campground/Trailhead: Take I-25 north through Santa Fe. Take the Glorieta/Pecos exit 299. Turn left (passing over I-25) then turn right onto SR 50. You'll take SR 50 for 6 miles to the "T" with SR 63 in the town of Pecos. Turn left (heading north) onto SR 63. You will travel about 18 miles on this road. After driving through Tererro look for Forest Road 223 and a sign for Iron Gate Campground and turn right (a few miles after Tererro). Iron Gate Campground is 4.3 miles at the end of this rough dirt road (which can be carefully driven with a passenger vehicle).
