  • Domain Driven Design in the Wild - Presented by Devlin Liles

    Lone Star College - Montgomery (MC-G G109)

Many of us have heard the term domain driven design, but what does it look like when implemented? Often it is described as a silver bullet to all the design issues that plague teams, but is that realistic? In this session we will be digging into what it means to use domain driven design effectively. We will be code reviewing and evaluating several example applications with traditional domain models compared to the same applications with domain driven designs. Tonight's topic will be presented by Devlin Liles. Devlin Liles is the president of Improving Houston and a passionate technologist. He prides himself on staying a generalist, but his passion is leveraging technology to solve the problems facing business. Devlin has an entrepreneurial mindset and has been a key contributor to growth and success of the Houston office being one of the founding employees in 2011. Since 2007, he has been presenting and teaching classes on software development practices and tools to audiences around the world including user groups, conferences, and community events. Devlin has held the prestigious Microsoft MVP Award for the past 6 years which is only awarded to 3,000 technologists' annually. He is the co-author, along with his good friend Tim Rayburn of Entity Framework 4.1 Experts Cookbook. • Coding Standards: Effective Not Just Efficient

    Lone Star College - Montgomery (MC-G G109)

  • Akka.NET and the Actor Model: Concurrency without the Pain

    Lone Star College - Montgomery (MC-G G109)

The .NET platform's most recent major releases prominently feature improved concurrency tools and keywords, and that's no accident. In a world where developers are expected to build applications that are consistently responsive across a wide range of devices, user experiences, and workloads knowing how to take full advantage of the power of concurrent programming is essential. But let's face it: even with nice tools like the TPL and async / await, multi-threaded concurrent programming has typically been a bottomless pit of despair, Heisenbugs, and lessons learned the hard way. None of this is true with Akka.NET and the actor model: a powerful programming methodology that makes building concurrent applications easy, fun, and much more powerful than what we had before. Presented by Aaron Stannard, CEO of Petabridge, a world leader in building distributed systems and tools in the .NET ecosystem.
