Wawayanda - Pre-ride Bearscat 50

Leading an intermediate endurance ride at Wawayanda. Planning to ride the 25-mile loop that was featured in last year's Bearscat 50. If you're new to Waway this will give you a great overview of the awesome trails. Plan for 4+ hours of riding, bring plenty of water and supplements for an endurance-paced ride. Ride starts from beach parking lot.

Thanks Colin- I knew I couldn't hang with Tom and Dave when they went into race mode, so just rode my pace. Anytime you want to jump ahead, I'll ride your wheel. Fun ride!

Thanks for arranging mark.. See you next weekend.. Think I might be hanging on your wheel as a pace man!

    Great.

Thanks again guys- Colin, Dave and Tom - for showing up for an awesome ride! Totally drained, but ride time for one lap was 3:26, so with limited stops and steady pace I should be able to make 4:00 cutoff. Even with the few stops we clocked in at 3:56!

    Great group!!

Think I am going to pass on the ride today. Done Waywayanda after rain. Lots of moving water and lots of hub deep standing puddles. Next time.

      Same here.

Just a heads up if you read this it poured for hours last night. water is still flowing everywhere as of 7am so I'm gonna pass. I could go tomorrow but the downpours gotta stop first. I am truly bumming but my road was flooded at midnight (ringwood)

There seems to be a minor change to the race loop from previous years - anyone know the area well enough to navigate the differences?

I saw the re-route, if I'm not mistaken it's just after coming out of Buddha and will bypass Old Coal and dump us on to Hemlock and Load. Old Coal is a fire road and I'm sure is rutted up and full of big puddles. Buddha and H & L are two of my favorite trails there - it just takes a long time to get to them....:)

I know, weather is iffy. If it doesn't rain too much tomorrow and forecast looks decent for Saturday a.m., ride's still on. If it's crappy late into Friday night, would anyone be opposed to change ride to Sunday morning, same time? Let me know- I can ride either day, just not Monday (Mahlon Dickerson ride).

    May 22, 2014

    • Dave

I can only do Saturday - looks like it's clearing today and we should be good

      May 23, 2014

I think we'll be ok too - I'm keeping it as is. Calling for rain Saturday evening.

Did a good portion of this loop last year on a hard tail. (remember Jim?) Really beats you up. Got to go full suspension on this one. This is an inspiring park - like no other in the area. Thinking about joining in, but undecided on if I want to tackle the full 25 miles...

My expectations as to times are increasing as the rains come in.....

I am still up in the air, only because I have a marathon on Sunday. If this trail is going to destroy my legs I might have to reconsider. I really want to ride here because of how good everyone tells me it is. Will you post this ride again in the near future?

    May 22, 2014

    • Mark C.

Yeah, this will be a tough ride to do and then a marathon the next day. If you really want, you could throw in a 2 1/2 mile swim in Lake Wawayanda and call it a triathalon!!

      May 22, 2014

    • Mark C.

Yes, more rides will be posted for this park, not necessarily this loop but hit other trails and do about 20 or so miles.

Are the trails like Jungle Habitat?

    May 17, 2014

    • Mark C.

Similar, maybe not as rocky. Good variety of everything.

No Joe Joe, not a race. The Bearscat 50 is the following Sunday 6/1.

Good point Jim, I was thinking Memorial Day was the following weekend, but it ain't. I don't mind paying ten bucks as long as I spend a good part of the day there and the money goes towards the park - as Dave says it is the best park in the state.

    May 17, 2014

  • Dave

Goes without saying but bring full camelbak and plenty of food + tubes,co2 or pump, etc. It's a solid 3+ hours in the best park in the state

    May 16, 2014

  • JimN

Just an FYI, but I'm pretty sure it will cost $10 to enter the park since it is Memorial Day weekend. We could park off Cherry Ridge Rd for free, but we won't start/finish in the right place. Not sure if you care. It doesn't matter to me either way. I'm in for the pain regardless.

Cool, Allen- think the last time I rode with you was at Raystown. Looking forward to it too!

Now that everyone's comments have got me a bit spooked - I'm in! Looking forward to riding with you Mark, it's been awhile.

As Cliff mentioned, trails are very tough, especially when the loop ties in White Dot, Pickle and Rattlesnake all in a row - and that's toward the beginning of a grueling 25 miles. This will not be a beginner friendly ride, I aim to complete the 25 miles in less than 4 hours- that is the cutoff time for first lap of Bearscat 50 before going out for a second 25 miler.

I took off work on wed. and did the loop. bring a bike that is in perfect condition. the ride is very tuff on you AND your bike. Very rocky in many places. little climbing on the whole ride yet yer beat by the end.
Bike type? eh depends on what you like under you for 3 + hrs.

    May 16, 2014

  • Muz

How are the trails.. Are they Rocky? What kind of bike we need for it?
