English Conversation. A chance to improve your vocabulary!

This card game is brilliant if you want to see a rapid increase in your English vocabulary; it is also suitable for most levels. The game begins with 18 forbidden words - for example, ‘nice’, ‘very’, ‘situation’, etc. The idea is that the forbidden words are those which either are overused by non-native speakers, or are direct translations from other languages. For example, ‘just’ is overused by the French, ‘situation’ is overused by the Turkish, and ‘very’ is overused by the Dutch. Players select 5 cards which range from easy to difficult topics, or questions such as ‘What is the most important advice you have ever been given?’ Players must then answer within 2 minutes, remembering not to use the forbidden words, but instead to select alternatives or similes. For example, ‘nice’ might be replaced by ‘pleasant’, lovely’, etc. The banana starts off in the middle of the table. Once we start playing, I keep a track of any ‘mistakes’ made by the players, and the banana is placed in front of the person who is making most of them. At the end of the game we add up the mistakes, and the person who has made the most overall wins the game. The cost to play the game is €5, per person. We meet on the 1st floor of Scheltema Bookstore, on the Rokin. A little Jack Russel dog always lies under the table, so you definitely can’t miss us!
