You are cordially invited to the next TEDxTheHague salon! Our September edition — themed How to Stay on Top(ic) — is curated by TEDxTheHague:
"Everyone has a dream, a wish to fulfill at some point in time. To become famous, build a business, or simply bring together like-minded people every month to find a relationship between seemingly random videos. So we're asking you, as we have done for exactly 10 years now, to connect and to connect the dots. That's how we like to stay on top(ic)."
We'll explore this theme by watching and discussing the following videos:
Julia Galef: Why you think you're right — even if you're wrong
Perspective is everything, especially when it comes to examining your beliefs. When our steadfast opinions are tested, Julia Galef asks: "What do you most yearn for? Do you yearn to defend your own beliefs or do you yearn to see the world as clearly as you possibly can?"
Tom Griffiths: 3 ways to make better decisions — by thinking like a computer
Cognitive scientist Tom Griffiths shows how we can apply the logic of computers to untangle tricky human problems, sharing three practical strategies for making better decisions — on everything from finding a home to choosing which restaurant to go to tonight.
Anthony McCarten: A (not so) scientific experiment on laughter
"Laughter — I may not be able to produce much of it but I will try to shine a light on it and ask the question: what is it?" True to his mission statement, screenwriter Anthony McCarten tells us four jokes to find out how laughter facilitates conversations and unites people.
Frans de Waal: The surprising science of alpha males
In this fascinating look at the "alpha male," primatologist Frans de Waal draws surprising parallels between how humans and primates choose their leaders. Spoiler alert: "Someone who is big and strong and intimidates and insults everyone is not necessarily an alpha male," de Waal says.
We are here every month except for August.
If you wish to join one of our events please email [masked] to be added to our distribution list.
We look forward to a stimulating evening filled with spirited conversation and new discoveries.
Don't miss it, till TEDxTheHague!

This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
• What is TEDx? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxTheHague, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxTheHague event, TEDTalks videos spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
• Do you have live speakers? We aim to enjoy videos from the fantastic archive of TED.com in a small setting. So typically we don't.
• Can I be a speaker at one of your events? If you wish to talk about your idea worth spreading do let us know. We would love to hear about it.
• How can your events be free of charge? Thanks to donations from our guests and partners.
Our Location Partner is The Bazaar of Ideas located in the Student Hotel at Hoefkade 9 in The Hague.
