Language #2: Io

Welcome to the second meeting of the group, "7 Languanges in 7 Months NYC," which makes its way through the chapters of the book "Seven Languages in Seven Weeks," by Bruce Tate.

This month we'll jump into the least well-known language in the book, Io, a simple and elegant language based on message-passing and on the prototype object model, meaning it's object-oriented but there are no classes, so every object is a copy of another object. This is of course the same paradigm as another little-known language called JavaScript, and the author says he gained a deeper underseanding of JavaScript by studying Io.

Our speaker will be Jeremy Tregunna, an iOS developer and core committer to the Io project from the beginning. He lives in Costa Rica, so his voice and likeness will be joining us via invisible waves through the air for a brief talk and an interview/Q&A.

You'll get the most out of the presentation and discussion if you read the chapter and attempt the exercises beforehand, but by all means, come to the meetup whether you have done so or not. For our first meeting on Ruby, people seemed to enjoy themselves no matter which category they were in.

Bring a laptop if you want to demonstrate examples during informal discussion following the Q&A with our guest, or just because you like carrying a computer everywhere.

Hope to see you there.

And oh yes, there will be free beer and pizza courtesy of Meetup.com, bless their souls.

Great getting an Io expert, even teleconferencing the speaker in via Google Hangout! Very cool!

This meetup was great! Our Costa Rica based speaker was extremely knowledgeable about the Io Language. He also provided astute comparisons to features in other languages. It was unfortunate that so many signed up and so few showed up, but that was their loss as they actually missed a great talk.

The door near the elevator at Meetup HQ on the 9th floor is locked. Can't get in. Brian or Nina, could you open the door? Thanks!

Raymond - the sign I put up must have gotten torn down. For everyone else - the renovation of our lobby is complete so please come to the *front* entrance at 632 Broadway. The meetup is on the 9th floor.
